11 SoCal Winter Warnings

It's getting cold (aka below 70)

11 SoCal Winter Warnings

The most wonderful time of year is here! Winter! Except...it’s still 80 degrees? Welcome to Southern California. While we desperately try to do winter justice, we struggle. I hope you can find some humor in it.

1. Ugg Boots

Everything fuzzy is coming. Literally. Including the softest and fuzziest boots known to man: Uggs. These boots, while they may be a tad bit basic, are definitely comfortable enough for those early morning classes. And despite being slippers and their clunkiness, I have always loved them. Judge me if you will.

2. Sweaters in any temperature below 75

Sorry, rest of the world that has weather. We just get cold a lot easier than you, and we don’t take breezes that well either. Plus, we don’t get to wear our cute sweaters as longs as you get to.

3. Frizzy Hair Everywhere

We have a beautiful thing in SoCal, called the Santa Ana Winds. These are winds created a bit north of the city of Santa Ana, and their bring very dry and static-y air to the rest of the California below. People get sick, skin is always dry, even without the cold.

4. Fake Snow

I hate this stuff. The glitter gets everywhere, the snow irritates your eyes, and it is very slippery. One time, we have this dance, and while it looked beautiful, so many girls were in the bathroom trying to get the now out of their eyes. 10/10 do not recommend.

5. Everybody starts buying the hot Starbucks Drinks

Now, a lot of you might think that people are buying these drinks to be basic and take selfies with them. Well, you would be right. But, some people actually get cold for the first time in eight months, leave them in peace.

6. Flannel

I know, flannel is more of a fall fashion, but second to sweaters, I see flannel everywhere during this time of year. It is warm, more woodsy, and definitely comfortable. Plus, you might in some areas only get to wear your sweaters the same time you wear your flannels. So I say, double up!

7. The Sun

Hi, Sun. I knew you were going to stick around. Yes, no lie, the Sun rarely leaves Southern California, even in winter. I think it likes the glorious sunsets at the beach or the way that people still come out during the coldest days.

8. Fake Ice Rinks

These really bring the holiday spirit home to me. I love how romantic and whimsical they are, how much laughter there is around them too. One of the Ice Rinks back home is next to the beach, and I have always wanted to hold hands with my significant other there.

9. Dark Makeup

Dark lips, dark eyes, dark eyebrows. Tis the season to shop at Sephora...llalalala, where is my cash?!?! I love how mysterious and enchanting makeup gets around this time, also, it makes glitter okay to wear again, it’s all good by me.

10. Knee High Socks

Everyone can say that they love this trend. Girls (and guys, you too) rock these beautiful and lacey leg decorations. It brings an aura of sweetness to a look, and they are adorable overall.

11. Everyone Freaks Out About Rain

When you do not get snow, you yearn for any kind of weather change. Thus, we in Southern California desire this change with rain. People go full umbrellas and rainboots when it sprinkles, I included. Like I said, we don’t get to do the weather thing often.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
