When I was a wee lad I believed that I didn’t need to go to school to be smart, solely for the fact that I drank Snapple. Since 2002 the beverage manufacture has been putting “real” facts on the bottoms of their caps. These facts may or may not help you on Jeopardy one day, but recently is has come out that some of the real facts aren’t so real. Below is a list of Snapple facts that turned out to be false:
1. Fact #70 “Caller ID is illegal in California.” This fact seems interesting, but with a quick check on the California Public Utilities Commission’s website you can find that it is in fact legal to have caller ID.
2 Fact #35 “Elephants sleep two hours a night.” According to the San Diego Zoo they actually sleep between three and seven hours a night.
3 Fact #179 “The Statue of the Liberty was the first electric lighthouse.” In reality the Souter Lighthouse was the first. This fact can be checked with the UK National Trust.
4 Fact #89 “The average American walks 18,000 steps a day.” With Fitbit being all the rage these days, we find this to be very false.
5 Fact #85 “The Mona Lisa has no eyebrows.” This is not the whole truth according to some historians. They believe they just eroded away over the years.
6 Fact #209 “The world’s largest pumpkin weighed in at 1,061 pounds in 1996.” Since then a larger pumpkin has been grown according to the Giant Pumpkin Commonwealth.
7 Fact #23 “The San Francisco cable cars are the only mobile national monument.” Again, this was proven to be false. The National Register of Historic Places notes there are ships, railroad cars and even roller coasters that are moving monuments.
8 Fact #471 “The most common name for a pet goldfish is Jaws.” This fact by all accounts is not testable, but who knows, maybe it is true?
9 Fact #371 “Grapes are the most popular fruit in the world.” Again, this is not testable but we can assume there might be some contenders.
10 Fact #868 “Thomas Jefferson invented the coat hanger.” If you go on Monticello website you can find this fact is false.
11 Fact #0 “Half of all Snapple “Real Facts” are actually fake.” There are definitely some facts that are false, but not half of them are fake. Also, this was just a Photoshop, so take this one as you will!
Disclaimer: All of these facts have been since taken off Snapple’s website, so don’t go looking for them.
