As young teenagers, we are all eager to head off to college. The word "freedom" lingers in our minds every time our parents tell us we can't stay the night at our friend's house, when we have daily household chores that we increasingly become sick of, or just simply when we are sick of being told what to do. What we don't get told often is that with freedom comes greater responsibility and a whole lot of spending our own hard earned money instead of our parent's. So how about we just slow down a bit and savor the moments when life is almost entirely easy.
1. Waking up and getting ready for school at 6am is a lot easier than waking up at 8am for a class in college.
2. You got to go home every night to your parent's home cooked meals.
That meal you always hated growing up now seems like a treat when you come home from college starving.
3. You didn't have to wear shoes in the shower.
4. You didn't have to put much effort into getting an A.
Now you spend 8,343,432,900 hours studying each week--there's not actually that many hours in a week--and you still don't know what a myelin sheath is.
5. If you missed a couple days of school, you didn't fail an entire class.
Usually in college, if you miss a couple of days, your grade drops tremendously or you just end up failing the course. This is a huge deal because who wants to take classes over again? Not me. So save those 2 or 3 "skip" days for the end of the semester or don't use them at all.
6. Fire drills didn't wake you up at 3 in the morning for no reason. They just saved you from that boring math class.
7. You didn't have to buy textbooks...you probably didn't even ever open one either.
I hate to tell you but most courses require a textbook and professors make sure you read them. Not to mention, one book alone costs more than your life.
8. One exam didn't count for 50 percent of your overall course grade.
So, say you bomb your first exam. Well, it's worth half of your grade so either you give up right then and there or you shoot for a perfect score on the next one...you choose.
9. You probably didn't have to share a very small space with someone else and if you did, I'm sorry.
You don't have much for privacy or personal space when you're literally sleeping right next to someone. Plus, if you're like me and your first (and second) roommates didn't work out so well, you may end up in a really awkward situation.
10. You probably played at least one sport and therefore, you were automatically pretty much fit.
Your coach in high school made you run suicides until you couldn't stand. In college, you have to force yourself to go to the gym or whatever else it is that you have to do in order to stay in shape. You find yourself not fitting into your favorite pair of jeans that you've been wearing for 5+ years.
11. Last but not least, you didn't have to think about what you wanted to do for the rest of your life.
It's a scary thought. Instead of worrying about what kind of dress you're going to wear for prom, you have to think about what kind of career is going to pay the bills.
