Now I don't know about you, but if I am ever feeling down or just looking for a way to escape, a nice Netflix binge session of "One Tree Hill" never ceases to liven my mood. I guess we will never know what it is about this teen drama that gets us so wrapped up, but after a few hours of OTH there's no doubt that you're feeling like a true raven. Go beyond all the over the top drama and you'll find that some of these old souls have a lot of wisdom to share. So here is a list of the top quotes from "One Tree Hill" that anyone could relate to and learn from. We might not be struggling with love triangles, teen pregnancy, school shootings, or severe daddy issues, but we can all learn a little from the life lessons these characters have to offer.
1. "Tragedies happen. What are you gonna do, give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks, you got to fight like hell to make sure your still alive. Because you are. And that pain you feel? That's life. The confusion and fear? That's there to remind you, that somewhere out there is something better, and that something is worth fighting for." - Nathan Scott
We might not be 17 years old and wondering why our wife chose a music career over her marriage, but we all know what it is like to feel the pain of a broken heart. Rather than give up, we can be like Nathan and remember the pain is there because there was once something great, and there will be again.
2. "I come in here and I sit in silence and hear the echoes of who we used to be. And so I wish for patience, grace, and strength to just let him be happy. Mostly I pray for the strength to not make his life worse because of what I want. That's the toughest part, letting go, you know? That's the part of grace that really sucks." - Peyton Sawyer
Part of the reason that Peyton was such an quietly strong character was because no matter how many times she had been hurt, she still chose love. In this case, this meant letting go of Lucas because she loved him so much. It is this selfless grace that made Peyton so strong.
3. "Sometimes life will kick you around, but sooner or later, you realize you're not just a survivor. You're a warrior, and you're stronger than anything life throws your way." - Brooke Davis
Brooke may have been the popular cheerleader, but she showed us that there's more to her than just pom-poms and a big bank account. Throughout the series, Brooke has by far the most drastic transformation. We get to watch her find herself through strength and suffering, a journey that isn't unknown to many viewers.
4. "Life is too short to play games. If you love someone and want to be with them, then go get them. Deal with the mess later. You don’t know what tomorrow will bring." - Haley James Scott
Although Haley and Nathan may have taken this idea a little too literal when they got married at 17, they showed us that with real love it doesn't matter. That kind of love doesn't involve mind games or waiting for confirmation: it is irrational and messy, but it is real.
5. "So don't be afraid to make mistakes, to stumble, to fall, 'cause most of the time the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. Who knows where life will take you. The road is long and in the end the journey is the destination." - Brian "Whitey" Durham
It seemed that nearly every episode someone was walking into Coach Durham's office looking for some kind of wisdom or life advice, and the man never failed to deliver.
6. "Yes, losing your heart's desire is tragic. But gaining your heart's desire? That's all you can hope for. This year I wished for love, to immerse myself in someone else and to wake a heart long afraid to feel. My wish was granted. And if having that is tragic, then give me tragedy. Because I wouldn't give it back for the world." - Peyton Sawyer
This is, by far, my all time favorite Peyton Sawyer, possibly "One Tree Hill", quote. If there's one thing that Peyton taught us, it is that just because people always leave, it doesn't mean they don't come back. Just because we've been hurt, it doesn't mean we should be afraid to love. Sometimes the high are worth the lows.
7. “It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re 17 and planning for someday. And then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And that someday is yesterday. And this is your life.” - Nathan Scott
After 10 years and a huge character transformation, we somehow still remember the boy who hijacked a school bus and crashed Peyton's car. When it was happening we didn't really notice, but looking back it went by in a flash. So stop planning for the future and just live, or else you might miss it.
8. Truth is still absolute. Believe that. Even when that truth is hard and cold and more painful than you’ve ever imagined. And even when truth is more cruel than any lie. - Lucas Scott
Being the writer of the group, we all knew Lucas had a way with words. Even when he spoke the painful truth, he had a way of making it sound beautiful. People can lie and manipulate you, but often times we have found that is the truth that causes us the most pain, because it is never what we want to hear.
9. "At this moment there are 6,470,818,671 people in the world. Some are running scared. Some are coming home. Some tell lies to make it through the day. Others are just now facing the truth. Some are evil men at war with good. And some are good struggling with evil. Six billion people in the world. Six billion souls. And sometimes, all you need is one." - Peyton Sawyer
Who could forget when Peyton painted 6,470,818,671 on her wall? But honestly, you might have, considering she changed her walls once a season. Some could argue this was a her way of defining her loneliness, while others might argue this is her way of showing how much she believed in fate. That's up to you.
10. “Let me tell you something about love. It does not knock often and when it does, you have to let it in.” - Brooke Davis
Out of all the characters on OTH, Brooke may have struggled the most when it came to opening herself up to love and commitment, but she never gave up. No matter what the situation and no matter how many times she'd been hurt, Brooke always took a chance on people.
11. "Sometimes in order to move forward, you have to go back." - Nathan Scott
Much like many of us have realized or will realize, Nathan discovered that somewhere along the way people can lose themselves. Going back doesn't mean you're moving backwards, it simply means you're trying to find something or someone you left behind.
So there you have it, just a bunch of kids--and one old basketball coach--sharing their secrets to life. These characters may not have figured everything out, but they knew how to adapt and overcome in nearly every situation. Rather than give up, they chose to live life to the fullest, appreciate every moment they had, embrace failure, be selfless, love with all of their hearts, and never look back. I think we can all take a page from that book.
