For many people, Valentine's Day can be rough, especially for those who have special memories about the holiday. Personally, I like Valentine's Days for the chocolate sales that happen the couple of days after. Even movies seem devoted to the romance of Valentine's Day, particularly the movie "Valentine's Day" (2010). There are multiple movies with romantic subplots or where the entire movie is spent on the love between two partners. However, there are also movies where there is little to no romance. Here are 11 movies to watch around Valentine's Day to not be reminded of the holiday.
1. "The Wizard of Oz."
"The Wizard of Oz" is one of my personal favorite movies, and is an all-time classic. The love in the movie would be between Dorothy and her family (including her dog, Toto). Most of the movie is Dorothy just trying to get home, and helping others along the way. There’s no subplot about Dorothy finding love along the Yellow Brick Toad, or even the Tin Man getting a Tin Woman girlfriend (though the reason he became the Tin Man in the first place was because of love). Plus, who can resist Toto?
2. "Mad Max: Fury Road."
This movie could be categorized as one of the best reboots of all time, in my personal opinion. While it has very little plot, the movie makes up for it with particle effects. The movie may seem at first like a movie about a man helping a group of women escape the clutches of a tyrant. It turns out that is is about a woman who saves a group of women from a tyrant, while Mad Max donates blood.
3. "The King’s Speech."
Based on true events and the novel of the same, this movie won several awards including the Golden Globe for Best Picture. The cast has great chemistry, and it was pretty clear that they were having fun as well.
4. "Silence of the Lambs."
This was the movie that revived Anthony Hopkins career; he plays the cannibal Doctor Hannibal . It has great suspense and will have you on the edge of your seat. Warning though, this movie isn't for those with a weak stomach. The movie can at times be a little bloody.
5. "Monsters Inc."
This is one my mom's favorite movies, so I watched this movie a lot when I was younger. It is funny, the voice talents are impressive, and the characters are likable, though I might be biased. Plus, Boo is adorable.
6. "Jurassic Park."
Another movie from my childhood, this movie is Steven Spielberg at his finest. anyone that loved the most recent sequel with Chris Pratt should watch the one that started it all. (Aside from reading the book, anyway.)
7. "Beverly Hills Cop."
One of the best '80s cop movies, "Beverly Hills Cop" help set off Eddie Murphy's movie career. After its somewhat dark beginning, the movie's tone turns a little campier. But that's OK. The movie has some a good final climax, plenty of funny moments, and doesn't take itself too seriously.
8. "Home Alone."
Why not avoid thinking about one holiday by watching a movie about another holiday? Its pure slapstick comedy, with a great cast. It also has a great story, and is pure fun.
9. "Finding Nemo."
Another Pixar classic, this movie is one of their best. The animation is amazing, while providing laughs for both kids and adults. It would be a great time to catch up on it or watch it again, since that a sequel is finally being released this year.
10. "Pan's Labyrinth."
At first glance, this movie seems more like a Halloween movie, or at least that's what I thought as my Spanish teacher was putting the DVD into the DVD player. But it is much more than that. For those who don't know what this movie is about, the best way to describe it would be this: a fairy tale set in World War I, with an ending left open for interpretation by the audience...sorry, spoilers.
11. "Hot Fuzz."
"Hot Fuzz" is the second movie in the NP trilogy. The first movie, "Shaun of the Dead," was awesome. "Hot Fuzz" is just as fun as the first, but instead of killing zombies, Simon Pegg is
fighting against unlikely force.
I hope that there was a movie for everyone on this list, each being completely different from another. Thanks for reading! :)
