What better way to get out of the house during the summer than to eat overpriced snacks at a freezing theater, watching a movie that has been hyped up all year? Nevertheless, it is always fun to go watch a movie with friends over the summer. Just remember to bring your oversized bag and bring your own snacks to avoid paying $30 for a bucket of popcorn. Below are 11 movies of all genres that should be worth your money this summer.
1. “Alice Through The Looking Glass” (May 27)
A continuation of "Alice in Wonderland" in which Alice travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter, starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway!
2. “The Conjuring 2” (June 10)
The sequel to the spooky movie “The Conjuring” promises to send a chill down our spines, even in the summer heat.
3. “Finding Dory” (June 17)
Finally! This sequel to our childhood favorite “Finding Nemo” follows the forgetful blue tang fish, Dory’s (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) adventure to find her family.
4. “Central Intelligence” (June 17)
This movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart (need I say more…?) is a perfect combination of action and comedy!
5. “The Shallows” (June 29)
A thriller about a surfer (played by Blake Lively) who gets attacked by a great white shark and must survive and get back to shore. Might not want to watch if you plan a summer at the beach.
6. “The BFG” (July 1)
This book by beloved author Roald Dahl, who brought us “Matilda,” “The Witches,” and “James and the Giant Peach” (among many), is being brought to animation this summer! For all of us who grew up reading Dahl books, this movie about the outcast Big Friendly Giant, who refuses to eat children like the other giants, will be the perfect hint of nostalgia.
7. “The Purge: Election Year” (July 1)
If you are a fan of “The Purge” movies, this movie promises to be better. It will be set in Washington D.C during election year and will follow a senator during the 12 annual hours that all crime is legal.
8. “The Legend of Tarzan” (July 1)
This movie is a continuation of the original "Tarzan" movie. Tarzan has gotten used to his life in London, but is called back to the jungle to defend his roots.
9. “The Secret Life of Pets” (July 8)
This animated movie is about pet’s lives when their owners leave the house. Just tell people you “have” to take your younger sibling or cousin, but in reality go because it looks like an awesome movie with cute animals.
10. “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” (July 8)

11. “Don’t Breathe” (August 26)
A horror movie about a group of thieves who think they can get away with the “perfect crime” by robbing a wealthy blind man’s home. However, they end up getting stuck playing his sinister games.
