As many of you already know, I absolutely ADORE children's movies. Between the beautiful animation styles and the strong sense of moral, they are the best of the best. But, as many of you don't know, I also love watching things that fall under the genre of adult animations. TV shows like "BoJack Horseman", "Archer", and movies like "World of Tomorrow", and "Nine" all fall under this umbrella of animated medias geared towards the adult populace. The often satirical storylines deal with the many of the hard grits of life, while also being hilariously funny. On days where I need something to match my actual mental state and make me laugh at the same time, these adult animations are the perfect remedy.
Most recently, my favorite of these adult animations has become "Rick and Morty." This sci-fi satire has captured my heart as well as my mind through its relevant plot lines, witty commentaries, and a daily dose of reality (though whatever unreal means). To me, there is nothing not to absolutely love about this show.
Even though it is a cartoon, there is some serious character development. When the show begins, you have no connection to any characters. Rick just seems like an awful, manipulative person while Morty seems too dumb to care about, and the rest of the characters are simply irrelevant at this point. However, as the series progresses, you learn to love and hate each of the Smith's in a different way. The connections between the characters quickly grow as episodes go on, and I found myself becoming more and more connected to each of them as well.
This is a seriously funny show; just look at all the jokes. They're everywhere, and it is absolutely amazing. Now, I will warn you, some of their jokes could offend you and your beliefs, but personally, I find, if you can't laugh at yourself and the flaws that your beliefs most certainly have (as do mine) then life will be absolutely no fun. And this is half the reason I love "Rick and Morty." This is a show not afraid to point out the elephants in the room. It is a show that will tell you how it feels, and you don't have to agree with it. And Rick, the apathetic scientist he is, definitely will not care if you agree with him or not. Pointing out the elephants in the room is important every once in a while, these are things that we as a society should talk about, things we should realize. We should let Rick and Morty open that door for us. (Or any other adult animation you find yourself interested in, because they all do it at one point or another.)
There is a fandom, and it is amazing. There are games to play, fan arts to enjoy, crossovers to imagine, and a plethora of support groups as we all anxiously await the release of season three. (Which, speaking of, needs to come out very soon before I lose my mind.) Just look up theories on "Rick and Morty" on YouTube, and you'll be entertained for hours by everything from lighthearted connections to conspiracy theories about everything. All in all, it's a great thing to be a part of.
So, my readers, get out and binge. This is a show worth your time. A show worth your energy. A show deserving of your heart and when you hit the end of season two, call me and we can pine for season three together.
