10 Ways to Make the Most of Your College Town Summer

At least once in our life we have had to stay at college for a summer and I am sure we can all agree that it completely is not the most fun thing to do with our summer. We stay up here for work, to get ahead on classes, or because our program decides to be started in the summer with a full class load. We may think our college town sucks because there seems to be nobody here but you are not the only one that is for sure. It seems coming up with things to do is hard and we get bored so easily but unbelievably there are tons of things you can do while you wait for all of your friends to get back in August.

1. Go to class

Unbelievably going to class in the summer is not the most terrible thing to do, let us face it the buildings have air so you will not be miserable.

2. Unpack your apartment

Time will come where you are searching through boxes because you didn’t take the two hours to unpack all of your stuff, make it easier for during the school year and just do it now. Learn where all of your stuff is now.

3.Decorate your room and living room

You do not want your place seeming like it does not have a home feel, and you will be spending a lot of time there. Do not go overboard but make it comfortable.

4. Do not take shifts off work

Unless you are so sick, you cannot even move, or there is a special occasion. The final weekends of school when you have no more money you will thank me, so save while you can. It may seem like the few other people in town are doing fun things and want you to join in, however, think of how many more days you have of summer and doing exciting things!

5. Find adventurous things to do

Take up a new hobby, go running, just drive around. But do something other than sitting in your apartment all day every day of the summer because you will get bored.

6. Go tubing down the river

Sure it takes you a bit to become an expert tuber but think about it once you figure it out that is all you will want to do!

7. Sleep while you can

You have all summer to sleep and catch up on the midday naps you will miss when you are taking a full course load in the fall and spring semesters, take advantage of it.

8. Start a new Netflix series

Let us face it; do we really want to wake up at 9 am every day because that is what time our body wakes us up? Stay up until 4 am watching the new show you are addicted to.

9. Make more friends

Chances are there are pages on Facebook you add yourself to, where other people, who are also here for the summer post things to do, take a chance. Yeah it may be weird but it is better than being bored all summer.

10. Eat at the "townie" places

There is a very slim chance you have ate at all the in town restaurants in the city, in instances like mine its better food than you could make yourself so don’t be stuck on the college starter pack with Ramen Noodles and PBJ’s.

Instead of being miserable or angry you have to stay here all summer, make the most of it. At the end of the summer, you will be better off because hey, you are already unpacked and you know the best things to get at the local mom and pop shops. Staying in your college town at first is not ideal because you think it is the worst place in the entire world. In the end, you will be happier spending the next few years here!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
