10 Ways To Combat Illness At School

Being under the weather is never fun, but somehow it was always a lot less difficult if someone was there to take care of you. However, there are a lot of ways to get better on your own, without having to freak out at the slightest sign of a cold.

1. Keep an emergency kit in your room

Stocking everything from cough medicine, Advil, and a thermometer can help to prepare you for whatever the winter might throw at you. Lysol probably wouldn't hurt either.

2. Air out your dorm room

If at all possible, open a window for a few hours to bring in some fresh air to your stuffy room. No one wants to get their roommates sick, because they will probably hate you, and getting some of those gross germs out of the room is a great way to help.

3. Get outside

This may seem counterproductive, but getting fresh air, especially if your window doesn't open, can be very helpful. Just don't forget to bundle up for the weather.

4. Take a hot shower

Not only will a hot shower help to clear you sinuses, if only for a brief few minutes, the steam does the body good. Not to mention, everyone feels just a little bit better when they're clean.

5. Wash your sheets

Washing your sheets may seem odd, not to mention a waste of precious laundry money, but washing your sheets can get rid of so many bacteria that can be keeping you sick.

6. Get some extra Vitamin C in your system

Whether it's eat an orange, or take an "Emergen-C" packet, Vitamin C can help to flush some of the bad gunk out of your system, and sometimes can even knock out a cold before you get it.

7. Get some extra sleep

Not that a college student ever needs an excuse for a nap, but extra sleep can really help to knock out any sickness faster.

8. Make herbal tea

Tea with honey can help to soothe even the nastiest of sore throats. So having a few different types of yummy teas in your emergency kit would be a great idea. Just be careful, some teas can make you super sleepy when you don't really want to be, I speak from experience.

9. Try to get comfortable

Nothing can really make getting sick any less awful, so try to stay as comfortable as you can. With fuzzy socks and your favorite blanket, anything is possible.

10. Call mom

Calling mom when you are sick can be possibly some of the best help you can get, not only will she drop everything to give you health ideas, mother knows best. She probably knows which medicine you really need before you even tell her what's wrong.

Overall, being sick is a real drag without someone to take care of you like at home. However, it can be a little easier, if you know how to prepare and take care of yourself.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
