One of the biggest fears most college students have when starting a new semester is if they'll do well in their college classes. After a few weeks in each class you will come to find what works best for you and what methods help you retain the information. For example, writing intensive courses will require a different approach than a math or science course. Here are a few tips on how to be successful in college classes.
1. Take notes
Whether these notes are handwritten or typed on a computer, make sure that you are taking notes. Just listening to a professors lecture will not help you retain the information.
2. Review the information
Once you've gone to class and have taken notes, come back to these notes later in the day and review what you've written. This way you can remember what you've written and you'll understand the information better.
3. Make flashcards
Flashcards are a great way to retain the information you learned during lectures. Take time and look over your notes and make flashcards from those!
4. Do your homework
Graded or not, homework is a very important part of being successful in college. Graded homework is a great grade booster and any homework is an awesome study method.
5. Study in advance
There is a ton of material covered on exams, so it's important that you know all of this information very well. Make sure to start studying in advance in order to ensure that you learn the information thoroughly.
6. Get help from the professor
Make sure to take advantage of your professors' office hours if you're struggling with understanding the material in a class. If you feel you need further help then there are usually tutors for the class that are more than willing to help!
7. Work with friends
Sometimes the best way to stay focused on studying is to work with friends. It's a great break from solo studying and sometimes your friends may be able to help you understand things you didn't before.
8. Don't study for long periods of time
Three to four hours is the maximum amount that you should study at a time. If you study too much then you'll eventually stop retaining the information. So make sure to give yourself a break!
9. Get sleep
At the time it may seem like a good idea to stay up late studying, but trust me you'll regret it when you're sitting there taking the exam. You'll perform much better on the exam if you get a full night's rest.
10. Stay positive!
It is so important to stay positive and feel confident about yourself. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of work and information you are given, but don't forget that YOU CAN DO IT
