10 Ways To Spot A Hufflepuff In College

Though the Harry Potter book and film series have long ended, the spirit of the wizarding world is very much alive in our hearts, as we continue to receive updated from author J.K Rowling on how future generations are getting along. In most recent news, Rowling announced that the Age of Hufflepuff is on the horizon, as the upcoming film, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” prepares for its release and the Hufflepuff house takes home the Pottermore House Cup.

As a member of the Hufflepuff house, I couldn’t be more excited. So in honor of our acheievements I think it’s time to celebrate Hufflepuffs in a modern context. Though many believe it’s an unfavorable placeholder house, Hufflepuff is in fact home to individuals of some of unique qualities. Don’t believe me? Here are 10 ways to spot a Hufflepuff in the college setting:

1. They’re the hard working, humble members in group projects.

Though members of other houses can be just as helpful, Hufflepuffs are unconditionally active, cooperative members in group projects, producing work on time, remaining ethical and distributing recognition where it’s rightfully due.

2. They’re really good at finding all your lost, drunk friends at frat parties.

We are particularly good finders after all. Drunk or not, we’ll quickly find your lost friend in the mass of people along with your misplaced student ID too.

3. They’re the students saving numerous seats for friends in lecture halls.

Hufflepuffs are loyal, giving friends who are always willing to help their buddies out, even if it means sprawling our bags, jackets and other belonging across four seats while everyone else is running late.

4. They always bring snacks to study sessions and social events.

Back at Hogwarts, it's no mistake that the Hufflepuff common room is right next to the kitchen. We're eager to care for others and know food is the cure to a lot of sour feelings. Expect baking, surprise food related gifts and insight into the best restaurants on and around campus.

5. No matter the context, they’re typically the most excited ones in the friend group.

Whether it’s game day, the season premiere of a TV show or the day you finally snagged your dream internship, Hufflepuffs are the most enthusiastic and celebratory of your college friends. They love good news and revel in happy emotions. As a result, we love parties in whatever shape, size or form they come in.

6. They’re the friends or roommates who work hard to personalize all gifts and events.

Birthday coming up? We're on it. Hufflepuffs love to go out of their way to make their friends feel special whenever opportunity arises. We'll make sure your dorm and gift is crafted with all our unique inside jokes in mind.

7. They’re the snugglers, cuddlers and huggers of the group.

We're affectionate, emotional people, what can I say? Plus, snuggling, cuddling and/or hugging always makes us feel better so we're just going to assume it does the same for you too.

8. They can be spotting mingling with multiple different social groups around campus.

Hufflepuffs are not quick to judge. They're always openminded when meeting new people and naturally look for the best in others. We jive well with a wide spectrum of people, making for a very large, diverse pool of friends and acquaintances.

9. They make it their business to make sure everyone stays safe and sound.

Hufflepuffs are the friends at parties who swoop in before you make the drunken mistake of hooking up with the guy you soberly vowed to not go near. They're always willing to help out when you're sick and happy to call you a ride home when you can't. Just remember to text us when you're home safe!

10. They are your greatest companions in times of distress.

Though Hufflepuffs are known for being kind and gentle people, we can just as easily turn into fighters when our friends are in pain or jeopardy. Hufflepuffs are the friends who will ruthlessly defend against your enemies. And we will answer the call whenever you need it. When you make a Hufflepuff your friend in college, you're making a friend for life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
