You had a bad day. You are overwhelmed with your workload and need just a moment to breathe. This year I’ve learned that self-care is so important in life, but it’s especially important while you’re at school. Here are a few tips on how to self-care and take care of yourself after a long day, or week!

1. Take a long hot shower/bath

Wash off the heartbreak of the day. Wash off the exhaustion with your favorite body wash, or soup. Wash off the stress from friends and the lecture. Doing this gets you to relax, and help clear your head.

2. Clean all your bedding

Nothing beats the smell of fresh linen. Cheesy, but it’s true. It’s like a fresh start or end of your day. For me, it’s like crawling into bed with my warm cat. Minus the cat.

3. Grab coffee with a friend

I know the last thing you want to do after a long day of classes and work, is going to socialize…but it’s for the best I promise. Reconnecting with an old friend always feels good. I always grab a cup of coffee with that friend who gives the bad advice and is always a shoulder to cry on. They are the best people to lean on.

4. Clean and reorganize your room

For me cleaning and reorganizing calms the storm before it happens. Make your bed. Unpack your backpack and put things where they belong in your room. This is probably one of my favorite self-care things to do! It calms me down because I get out the stress in a healthy way. And, it is rewarding in its own.

5. Create a list of goals

They could be daily, weekly, or monthly. They can be work-related, life-related, or school related. I do weekly goals because it gives me something to work towards, along with the best feeling at the end of the day is checking something off your list!

6. Read your favorite book or poems

One of my favorite things to do when I’m feeling overwhelmed is to read one of Rupi Kaur’s books and poems. I feel like she really understands what I’m going through, and it feels less lonely.

7. Pamper yourself

Go out and get your nails done! Or stay in, and put a face mask on and do your nails yourself. You deserve the pampering!

8. Wear something that makes you feel confident and sexy

It’s been a long week and you want to hide away, I get it. No! Put on your best jeans—the one that makes your ass look good in! Put on your favorite top and get out there! You deserve the compliments!

9. Unplug from social media

Unplug from the drama and negativity. It’s okay to unplug, take a break, and take care of yourself.

10. Do nothing at all

This where I feel the guiltiest, but it works the best for me. I always feel like I need to be doing something – even though it adds to the stress. Take 30-minute to a 60-minute break! Crawl into bed and just breathe.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
