I come from a tiny little town that no one has ever heard of. There's one stoplight on the outermost limit just before it turns into another small town and the population is right at 2,000. There is one high school, one middle school, and one elementary school. It's tiny and it's cozy. But most of all, it's home. Here's just a couple of ways that you know you're from a small town too.
1. Everyone knows your business.
Growing up, you'd better not do something you didn't want Mom and Dad knowing about. Chances are, before you even get home, they've heard about it and they're not happy.
2. People's houses are landmarks.
"Oh just go down by George's house and take a left, and when you get to John's, it's about 2 miles down the road."
3. Speaking of directions, visitors hate them.
All of the roads are named after someone's grandpa or grandma. If you want to go somewhere, you have to take the family tree to get there.
4. Nothing is in walking distance except maybe your barn.
The closest grocery store is 20 minutes away at best and if you're going to the mall, prepare to travel for at least an hour both ways.
5. Anytime you go anywhere, people know you by name.
And if they don't, they'll look at you and say, "Oh, you must be _____'s son/daughter."
6. The mayor of your little town is probably your next door neighbor...
...and you know him/her by name.
7. There's a church on every corner
If you're new in town, the first question will probably be "Where do you go to church?". Don't take offense, it's just the way it is.
8. If you're new to the neighborhood, you can expect cookies
Also expect the neighbor's whole family coming over to welcome you.
9. Sunday afternoons are for going to grandmas
and eating insane amounts of home cooking. It usually consists of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, cornbread, and sweet tea.
10. Not everyone is a redneck.
Just because our town is smaller than your school doesn't mean we're idiots, hicks, or rednecks. We're just one little community that has your back in good times and bad.
