10 Ways You Know You Grew Up In A Small Town

When you grow up in a small town, there are many things you know to be true. Here are just a few I experienced from growing up in a small town.

1. You get "where is that?" and "I've never heard of it before," all the time.

If you grew up in a small town you definitely have heard these before. Some people may not even think it's a real town. I speak from a personal experience where a professor thought I made the name of my town up.

2. When you try to tell them where it is, it's difficult because it's near other small towns.

Not only do they not know where your town is, they also have no clue where the towns around it are either. So it comes down to three options: trying to describe what's around it, telling them how far you are from the nearest well-known city, or just giving up.

3. You know everyone.

And by everyone, I mean everyone. You can name most, if not all, of your graduating class. A trip to your local Dollar General takes three times as long because people who know you have to stop and catch up. Think it's okay to run to the store in your pajamas and no makeup on? Think again. You never know who you're going to run into.

4. There is literally nothing in your small town.

You may have a gas station, some schools, a couple churches and if you're lucky, a stoplight. But if you need to go shopping for something other than fruit at the local farmers market or the basics at Dollar General down the road, you know that you have to drive into a larger town.

5. When you need to drive into a larger town it takes at least half an hour to get there.

By the time you arrive you might as well do all of your errands now. The next thing you know, you have spent hours in town, and you still have to drive home.

6. A trip to your local Walmart is practically a family reunion.

Remember what I said about not being able to go to the store in pajamas and no makeup on? I wasn't kidding. You honestly don't know who you will run into at the local Walmart. And not to mention half of the time you run into people who know your parents, and the next thing you know, they are hugging you, and you still have no idea who they are.

7. You know all of the back roads because let's face it, that's all your town consists of.

They may be a little on the bumpy side, especially if they are dirt roads, but let's be realistic, they are the best and fastest way to get around. Who cares if you just washed your car? After living in a small town long enough, you soon realize it's practically pointless to try to keep your car from being dirt free.

8. During high school football games, your town turned into a ghost-town.

High school football is huge, especially in small towns. If you're not there, good luck finding things open in town. Everyone and their cousin will most likely be at that game. It's better to just hit the stores before or right after the game.

9. After the game, you had 30 minutes to get what you needed before everything shut down.

If you hit the stores after the game you won't even have 30 minutes until the whole town shuts down. By this time, it's probably better to just wait until the next day.

10. You think you can't wait to leave, but when you come home to visit you're glad you did.

When you grow up in a small town, it can get on your nerves. How you run into everyone everywhere, how rumors spread like wildfire and how there isn't anything to do in town. But most of the time when you go back home it feels like nothing changed, and you will be so glad you came home.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
