Everyone has their own list of the top saddest movies they've ever seen. Frequent films that come to mind are Titanic, Schindler's List, The Notebook (or any movie that is associated with the brilliant Nicholas Sparks), Forrest Gump, and American Sniper. These pictures I have seen numerous times and I never fail to tear up during them.
Though the listed are amongst the most popular heart-tugging, there are some films that people tend to overlook. While watching the following films, I secure a box of tissues before starting the movie. Here are ten sad movies that are often overlooked. Warning... slight spoilers may lie ahead.
1. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
There is no questioning why this film would be at the top of the list; all who have seen it would probably agree. The movie shows that friendship has zero boundaries when it comes to race and religion, even in World War II. Bruno, whose father is the SS commandant of the nearby concentration camp, befriends Schmuel, a young Jewish boy. The two become fast friends and Bruno visits Schmuel every day outside the camp's gates. The ending scene to this movie is one of the most shocking/plot twisting/heart tugging of a motion picture.
2. Marley and Me
I am a sucker for any movie involving an animal. I am also a sucker for Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston, and Eric Dane. The movie shows how much our pets really do mean to us and how much it hurts when one is taken away. They really are family.
3. The Fault in Our Stars
I read the book before I saw the movie. I knew exactly what was going to happen and at the exact moment it would happen. My friend and I still had to drag one another out of the theatre in hysterics.
4. P.S. I Love You
I've been a Gerard Butler fan since Phantom of the Opera in 2004. Add in Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, and Ireland (I discovered that Wicklow County, where it is filmed, is just as picturesque as the movie depicts), it is sure to be grand. When watching this film, I always make sure I have a full package of tissues since I can expect to cry from the very first scene to the last. You've got to love Gerry's letters.
5. About Time
This may be me being biased considering this movie is tied with Titanic as my favorite move of all time and my love for Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams. One may think this movie is about a love story between Tim and Mary, which it is, but the sole purpose of this movie is to show the relationship between father and son. The scene where Tim and his father, played by the brilliant Bill Nighy, go back to when Tim was a boy for a final walk on the beach gets me every time.
6. The Lion King
I don't think I need to explain this one.
7. Remember Me
The fact that this movie gives zero indication that it is the year 2001 and the ending scene's date is September 11 until the last two minutes of the film baffles me. No further explanation.
8. Up
All that needs to be said is I hope my future husband loves me as much as Carl loved Ellie.
9. Finding Neverland
This is probably my favorite role Johnny Depp has ever played. Plus, being alongside Kate Winslet adds to the factor as well. And that Peter Pan is involved. The connections between playwright J.M. Barrie (Depp) and how each of Sylvia's (Winslet) boys represent aspects of Peter Pan and Sylvia representing Wendy is extraordinary.
10. My Girl
Everyone loves a tale about two best friends who happen to fall in love, even at such a young age...until a plot twist throws everything off.
Happy movie watching but always remember to have a box of tissues nearby!!!!
