I just got my second tattoo on Friday. After talking with my tattoo artist while getting inked, I realized there are some things people should be aware of that they might not always do before working with another person to put a piece of art on their body. Getting a tattoo is a lot of preparation for the client, To all those thinking about, or about to get, their first tattoo, here are some helpful tips for you to keep in mind.
1. Shower the day of.
You are going to be up close and personal with another person for an extended period of time. Don't make them uncomfortable and SHOWER. Clean your body, especially the area you are going to be getting inked. And please, please wear deodorant.
2. Shave the area.
Save some time at the parlor and shave the area you will be getting your tattoo. Not only is it easier to tattoo a clean surface, but it will be easier for your skin to heal, too.
3. Bring snacks and water.
Depending on the size of your piece, you could be at the parlor for a while. Make sure to bring a non-messy snack and a water bottle to keep yourself satisfied. These can help calm your nerves, and can be beneficial in keeping you hydrated and full.
4. Google tattoo pain charts.
While these aren't necessarily accurate for every person, knowing how much your area might hurt will help you prepare for the actual pain. This way, you won't psych yourself out too much, and will be ready. Everyone has a different pain tolerance, so keep that in mind.
5. Bring reference pieces.
If you're getting something specific like I did, bringing reference pictures will help your artist figure out what you want, and will be able to draw up something easier. Reference pictures can include personal drawings, pictures off the Internet, and different types of fonts.
6. Don't drink the night before.
I know partying is fun, but make sure you don't drink the night before getting a tattoo. The alcohol in your system could possibly thin your blood, which will make it harder to tattoo your skin.
7. Don't take painkillers.
Again, taking painkillers before receiving a tattoo could thin your blood, making it harder to tattoo your skin. Always check with your artist beforehand if taking anything will mess with your body.
8. Tip!!!
This should go without saying, but make sure to tip your artist. They just put artwork on your body. Standard tipping for a tattoo artist is 20-35%. Think of it like going out to dinner - you should tip for service. If you can't afford to tip, you probably shouldn't be getting a tattoo.
9. Remember your ID.
Make sure you have your ID on you, because they cannot do business with you if you don't have it. They have to make sure you are of age to be receiving one by yourself.
10. Don't forget to clean your new tattoo.
After receiving your tattoo, remember to wash your ink a few times a day with unscented soap. This will help with the healing process, and will help sooth the irritated skin.
Happy tattoo-ing!
