The '90s Japanese cartoon scene has awoken, and it's taking the app store by storm. "Pokémon GO" has invaded almost every aspect of social media — and consequently, our lives. If you, like the rest of the world, are preparing to be the very best, like no one ever was, here are some tips you'll need if you want to catch 'em all:
1. You can recycle Pokéballs
Some Pokémon are harder to catch than others. We all know that frustration: that Eevee you've been tracking dodges your throw, or you're distracted and toss just a little too high. If you miss, you can tap the Pokéball before it disappears from your screen, and get it back.
2. You actually have to walk to hatch the eggs —or do you?
Unfortunately, cars and four-wheelers don't cut it. The distance you travel won't be counted by the app if you're traveling more than six miles per hour. But, unfortunately:
I think this video will be helpful to all my fellow lazy Pokémon trainers.
3. You can get fire types at gas stations, primarily on sunnier days.
Which really makes sense, if you think about it.
4. Similarly, some Pokémon, like Ghastly, only come out at night.
Proceed with caution.
5. Catch everything you see.
Seriously, even if it's your 500th Pidgey, catch it. It boosts your XP and your stardust, which can be used to power up other Pokémon. Plus, you can trade it in to the Professor anyway.
6. Go out in large groups.
The more people there are playing "Pokémon GO" in one area at one time, the more likely you are to see cool Pokémon. This will also keep your mom from sending you that link 857 times about those people getting robbed playing "Pokémon GO".
7. Don't use battery saver mode.
Battery saver mode is a great concept where if you turn your phone upside down, such as to hold it down next to your hip while you walk, the screen locks to save power. It will buzz whenever there's a Pokémon nearby. I'm sure they'll work out these bugs eventually, but for the moment, every time my screen locks in battery saver mode, when I open the game back up, it freezes.
8. There is actually a more precise way to track Pokémon.
Here's how it works. After you select a Pokémon from your nearby menu, you tap your compass. A small green box will begin to pulse from the nearby box in the corner when you are facing in the right direction. It will pulse more rapidly the closer you get to the Pokémon.
9. You don't have to beat every Pokémon in a gym to weaken it.
If you're battling a level two gym, and one Pokémon defending it has 200 CP and the second has 3000 CP, don't worry. By defeating the 200 CP defender, you lower the gym's prestige. When the gym's prestige is low enough, the lower CP Pokémon will be kicked out. That makes it easier for another trainer to come along and knock out the higher level defender.
And most importantly:
10. Be smart.
I know it's tempting when you know there's a Pikachu in someone's backyard or a Magikarp in their swimming pool, but do not trespass. By the time you explain to a homeowner what Pokémon is, the police will already be there. Do not walk into traffic, and do not walk alone in an unfamiliar area alone. Take a bottle of water hunting with you. Stay hydrated, friends.
Armed with this knowledge, I urge you out into the world, now thanks to Nintendo, filled with the invisible cartoon creatures of our childhood.
