You probably just finished unpacking your last box and classes are starting this week. Even though it's syllabus week I'm sure you're still nervous and probably have no idea what to expect. Here's a few tips for your freshman year.
1. Go to the WOW events
Not only will you make some friends going to all these different events, but you'll get more information about all the different clubs and organizations on our campus. It's important to get involved with things other than just class.
2. Wait until the first day of class to buy your books
If you're the type of person who can't stand being unprepared then this may be hard for you. If you wait until the first day of class, usually you'll figure out what you actually need and what you don't need. It will save you lots of money.
3. Use the campus bookstore as a last resort
Make sure to check Amazon and Chegg.com for your books using the ISBN number before you buy them from the bookstore. They're almost always triple the price through the school.
4. Find your classes before the first day
Nothing is worse than walking into your first class late. Not to mention how sweaty and gross you'll be if you get lost on the way.
5. Don't spend your DB too fast
When it's exam time and you have no money left on DB to get coffee or pizza, you'll be extremely devastated.
6. The dining halls put the menu online
If you google UNCC Dining you can figure out what SOVI and Crown are having that day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That way you can pick which one has what you like that day.
7. Make friends in class
It's important to make friends the first week of class because they will be your go to for the entire year. If you wait til mid-semester everyone will already have study groups and you'll be stuck by yourself.
8. Meet your professors
This is not only important for recommendation letters later on, but it can help you out a lot during the semester. A professor is more likely to actually remember you if you go up to them after the first class and introduce yourself. Most professors are a lot nicer than they seem during lecture.
9. Download pocket points
Pocket points is an app that you use during class. Believe it or not, all of my professors last year did not allow electronics at all. AKA, you get kicked out of the class if they see your phone. If you download this app and open it when you get to class it will count how long you go without using your phone. The more time you spend off your phone, the more points you earn. You can use these points at places like Chick-fil-a, Papa John's, Palm Beach, etc. to get free stuff or discounts. But it obviously only works in academic buildings!
10. Consider rushing
You can't say that being in a fraternity or sorority isn't for you, unless you've tried it. Forget about all the stereotypes and rumors you've heard because they're probably not true about most of the people in Greek Life. If you're looking for an opportunity to lead, serve and grow on campus then GO GREEK! Don't knock it til you try it!
