We all have a spirit animal. When someone claims that they have a spirit animal, it is typically a statement that said person or thing is a representation of you or what you want to be, especially when using it online. I have a lot of so-called spirit animals, but I only have few that I can really identify with, or that I simply think are awesome. One of my top spirit animals is Ramona Victoria Flowers from "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World." She's somewhat complicated, mysterious, blunt, eccentric, one of a kind, and likes to talk about bread and enjoys getting coffee with really cute, clumsy bass players who have good hearts. Here are a few things that we can relate on.
We both are attracted to Scott Pilgrim.
This is pretty much a given. Both Ramona and I have similar taste in guys, ha ha. We both think that Scott is the cutest thing to grace this planet, whether one of us likes to admit it at first or not.
We are socially awkward at parties.
And we sometimes leave early, too.
We like wearing unique ensembles.
Ramona wears a lot of colorful outfits that look custom-made. She also consistently dyes her hair a variety of colors, such as red, pink, blue, and green. I feel like I was more like Ramona when I was 14, because I wore mismatching outfits and was probably more prone to dying my hair crazy colors back then. Either way, unique is awesome.
We're both really cool.
This is basically a given, right? Even though Ramona has a lot of personal baggage, she's still awesome because she marches to the beat of her own drum and says what she wants, and doesn't change regardless of others. "I change my hair color every week and a half dude, get used to it." That's cool.
Our past tends to catch up with us.
The whole movie is Ramona trying to start over; moving from New York to Canada, forgetting past relationships, and meeting new people, including Scott Pilgrim. It's not easy because wherever she goes, her ex-boyfriends all end in the same spot at the same time. It's just a bit complicated. I have the same issue.
We both have the tendency to fall for pretentious, brainwashing guys.
Deep down, we know that we deserve a good guy like Scott, but we are so easily pulled into the bad guy's manipulative charms, finding it that much more difficult to delete them from our lives. It takes us a long time before we realize we need to stop going back to them.
We have an interesting variety of ex-boyfriends.
I haven't dated a famous skateboarder slash movie star, and I sure haven't been linked to a record label guy, or even dated wannabe pirate karate fighting dudes with demon hipster side-kicks. I have, however, dated some of the craziest clowns out there. It's one of those things where you look back and laugh and go "What was I thinking?" - just like Ramona did during most of the film.
We are sometimes aloof.
Because we fear getting our hearts broken, we subconsciously make sure there is enough distance between us and the person that we are interested in, even though we don't want to admit that we are falling for them or are even interested in them. It's a defense mechanistic after getting hurt so many times.
We are not high maintenance.
On Ramona and Scott's first date, they walked around in the freezing Canadian air, chilled on the swings, and just talked. On their second date, they stayed in, ate bread, drank wine, made out for a bit and then went to a movie set so Scott could beat up one of Ramona's evil exes. I mean, that's not the most glamorous thing, but she wasn't complaining.
We both like tea a lot.
That time she listed all of those tea options and I couldn't keep up.
I'm proud to say that Ramona Flowers is one of my main spirit animals because she's a fantastic human, fictional or not. Who is yours?
