When you're with someone for 24 hours a day, three weeks straight, you learn a lot about each other. Both the good and bad come out from each side, and at times, you really have to work hard to keep it together. However, there's no doubt that this close quarters situation acts to strengthen a relationship and really sheds light on things that may not have been as apparent before.
For the past three weeks, I have been on a road trip with my boyfriend of three years, Connor. We traveled across the many biomes of the United States, starting in Missoula, MT and finishing back home in Atlanta, GA. We had hiccups, changes in plans and much-needed support from our “fans” that left us with an unforgettable experience. Many thought we would not make it in his ‘96 Tacoma, our trusty steed throughout the journey, however, we proved them wrong by driving into our hometown with our heads held high.
Throughout the 6,000+ miles, there wasn’t always constant conversation, and I’m sure that at some points both Connor and I were thinking similar things. Although some thoughts might be embarrassing, here’s a couple that come to mind.
1. I hope I don't smell too bad….
After about four nights of camping, which is short compared to the average, you start to build up a stink. Unfortunately, I was always more stinky than my male counterpart, no matter how much I begged to differ. But who needs deodorant, right? Depends on the person, I know. When you’re having too much fun on a road trip its easy to forget!
2. A hotel bed would feel pretty good tonight…
Again with the camping! Don’t get me wrong, we absolutely love setting up the tent and taking on the campground, but I know I can speak for myself in saying that there were times that a real bed definitely would have improved my mood.
3. Today we will NOT get lost and we WILL be on time!
… Never happened. Road closures and early park hours are a real thing people! It’s extremely important to plan ahead and take these things into consideration or else you will really feel the pressure while adventuring. However, taking scenic byways, as well as any other roads that are not the highway, can really give you a feel for the area while providing some great views, even if they do take longer.
4. I would kill for a milkshake and french fries right now.
Maybe just me? But there were a couple long drives through the desert that really could’ve been improved by some “junky” snacks, no matter how unhealthy they were compared to our stocks of trail mix and dried fruit.
5. COWS!
And sheep, and goats, and… emu? If you ever do a road trip, get ready for the immense amount of farm animals that you may never get tired of seeing if you're an animal person like me. Also, look out for more exotic animals! We were lucky enough to see a roadrunner, a couple foxes, MANY elk, and more.
6. If he/she farts one more time…
Close quarters guys. Sometimes I had enough.
7. We have so much time left!
Even on our three week road trip, we constantly said this in excitement of things to come. However, we realized that many of the sites around America deserve much more time than people typically give them; time we didn't necessarily have. A lesson from experience: try and plan a trip that leaves ample time for national parks, monuments, etc AND cities so that you don't feel rushed. If you don’t get enough time somewhere, plan to come back!
8. I wonder what's been going on in the world…?
... Or maybe I don't want to know? But seriously, while traveling around the country with extremely spotty cell service you can pretty much be left off the grid for periods of time. This is a great way to make you enjoy the places around you, but also creates a sort of isolation. While being in your own little world of adventure can be a wonderful thing, I know I became curious as to current events in the news.
9. OK.... now THIS is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
I cannot begin to explain how many amazing, spectacular places there are to visit around the U.S. I had never really tried to visit national parks, monuments or forests in the past, but I can say that I’m addicted now. During this road trip, we saw things unique to the country as well as the world. To list just a few must see’s: the Coastal Redwoods, White Sands National Monument, Crater Lake, Carlsbad Caverns and Yosemite National Park. But there is SO much more! Sometimes you’ll even forget you’re in America because of how different the landscapes look and feel.
10. Is it really over?
Like any big trip, the ending is bitter sweet. I can speak for both Connor and I when I say that the long awaited road trip went by in almost a blur, leaving us in awe of everything we had seen. We are definitely happy to be home, but I already want to start planning another adventure! Overall, we waited months for this trip of a lifetime, and I wouldn't trade our experience for the world.
Get out there and start planning a road trip of your own!
