10 Things You Wouldn't Believe Were Popular 10 Years Ago

2006 doesn't seem all that long ago anymore.

Looking back on it now, it's so hard to believe that 2006 and all of its crazy trends happened 10 whole years ago. It feels like just yesterday we were breaking up with our middle school boyfriends through notes in class and jamming out to songs like "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne. Middle school dances were the craze, and tight clothes was the trend. And if nostalgia is as sweet to you as it is to us, then you'll love reminiscing on the trends and pop culture that shaped our lives in 2006. Here are some things that you probably wouldn't believe happened 10 years ago.

1. Tight Tops & Jean Skirts

Back in the day, you never would have guessed that America's youth would migrate to large shirts and yoga pants, because a tight jean skirt and the tightest Abercrombie shirt you could find was all you needed to be considered socially acceptable. You probably even used hair ties to tighten your loose shirts whenever your name brand tees were dirty.

2. Myspace

When social media was first introduced to the world, many teenagers found it in the form of MySpace, where the hardest decision you had to make was deciding which layout to choose for your profile.

3. LimeWire

And who can forget basically infecting your computerCa in order to download free music? Of course, no one wanted to pay $1.00 per song so it was completely acceptable at the time.

4. The Original iPods

Before everything went touchscreen and Apple had just risen to fame, the iPod Shuffle was a stick with buttons, and the Nano had a screen barely bigger than the size of your thumb.

5. Zunes

Many of you were probably forced to buy one of these simply because of the fact that Apple products were too expensive and the music was cheaper. No worries, we don't blame you.

6. Flip Phones

And you were the coolest kid on the block, if everyone knew you had a sleek new Razor. No one would have guessed that within just a few years we'd all be upgrading to touchscreen cell phones with internet on the go.

7. American Idol

In 2006 American Idol still consisted of its original three judges, and it was still the most viewed show of the time. Even though it began to phase out within the next several years, we have Simon Cowell to thank for starting the trend of televised singing competitions that society favors so much.

8. High School Musical

It didn't matter who you were or how old you may have been. If you lived in '06, High School Musical was your favorite movie of the year. Maybe it was the story line, catchy music or well rehearsed choreography that brought this Disney Channel classic so much fame. Whatever the reason may be, it remains an all time favorite for many of us to this day.

9. Fergalicious

No one really knows why this song became so popular. It's basically Fergie singing about why she's so awesome. But regardless of the reasoning behind its popularity, you couldn't help but sing along every time you heard it on the radio. Probably because it was so catchy.

10. Text Lingo

Even though YOLO hadn't been thought of yet, we had many other text phrases to use in 2006. The basic ones like IDK and LOL are even still used today. They probably began because texting on a flip phone was such a pain, and you had to press the same button 3 times just to get one letter. But since they put whole keyboards on cell phones, there really isn't an excuse for it anymore, so thankfully most of it has phased out.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
