Unlike most high schoolers, I have spent a good deal of time researching and learning about the Titanic. Not the cheesy 1997 James Cameron film, the actual ship.
While most people know the basic facts about what happened that night, not everyone knows just how many backstories and little details are intertwined in that ship's history.
So, here are 10 things that you probably did not know about the Titanic and her passengers.
1. Milton Hershey was supposed to sail on the Titanic.
The man who founded Hershey's Chocolate Company and has a town named after him in the state of Pennsylvania had put down a deposit for 1/10th of his stateroom for the Titanic's maiden voyage. However, business back home made it so that he needed to get home earlier, so he booked the voyage with his wife on the German ship 'Amerika'. This was one of the ships that sent ice warnings to the Titanic.
2. The Titanic was the largest ship of her time.
The Titanic was 882 feet and six inches long, and she was the largest man-made moving object at the time.
3. There were 246 injuries and two deaths recorded during the construction of the Titanic in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
While we all know the Titanic took lives when she went down in the Mid-Atlantic, it is a lesser known fact that she also took lives while being built.
4. There was a lifeboat drill scheduled for the very same day the ship sank.
There was supposed to be a lifeboat drill on April 14th, the same day the Titanic struck an ice burg, but it was canceled by Captain Smith for unknown reasons.
5. The musicians played as long as they could while the ship was sinking.
There were a lot of acts of bravery that night, and this is one. The musicians played their instruments on the boat deck as long as they could while the ship was sinking, to keep the passengers calm. Sadly, none survived.
6. Among the survivors were three dogs.
The Titanic was equipped with many amenities, one of these being a dog kennel. There were 12 dogs on board, three of which survived.
7. Titanic was one of three sisterships.
This may be more commonly know, but Titanic was one of three Olympic class sisterships. The other two being Olympic and Britanic. Britanic sank four years after the Titanic in 1916 as a hospital ship in World War I. Olympic collided with the HMS Hawke in 1911, but after some repairs was still in service until she ended her career as a passenger ship in the 1930's.
8. Stewardess Violet Jessop worked on all three ships.
Jessop worked on all three liners and was on both the Titanic and Britanic when they sank as well as being on the Olympic during her collision.
9. The owners of Macy's Department store died on the Titanic.
Probably one of the saddest but most amazing stories of love there will ever be. Ida Straus, wife of once United States Representative and co-owner of Macy's Isidor Straus, stayed behind with her husband because they weren't allowing men to board the lifeboats. The two perished together in the tragedy.
10. It was nothing like the 1997 film.
I may have already expressed my passionate dislike for the movie, but there is nothing worse than romanticizing a tragedy, especially when it degrades and devalues the actual people who had to live this tragedy.
