10 Things You Need To Know Before You Join a Gym

My four weeks of gym-ing tells me that I am experienced enough to write this piece. This is my take on the ten things you need to know before you join a gym:

  • BRING YOUR OWN EARPHONES: Headphones available at gyms have been used by hundreds of other gym-goers so it is necessary that you get your own pair. Also, these public headphones sometimes don’t work, have a very long cord and are of poor quality.

  • WEAR TRAINING SHOES: Your regular joggers will just make your feet hurt. This is a pricey investment but buy one pair of training shoes/sneakers from Nike. You won’t get tired easily and you won't get tired easily.

  • DO NOT WEAR BELL-BOTTOMS: Or loose-fitted jeans. You’ll probably trip when you use the treadmill, cycle or run if the bottom of your jeans/pajamas have a flaring bottom. Stick to skinny tights or buy proper gym attire from any sports shop. Also, don't wear 100% cotton clothes, skirts or dresses.

  • EAT HEALTHY: You can’t keep relying on your healthy-as-ever fast-food diet to be fit or to lose weight. You will want to see results as soon as possible if you’re working out five/ six times a week. Please eat fruits, vegetable and home-made (and oil-free) food. However don’t stop eating just to lose weight quickly! You’ll probably faint at the gym or get dangerously ill if you don't eat. Gym tires you out so it’s necessary that you’re taking essential nutrients.

  • LISTEN TO YOUR TRAINER: They know what they are saying! Follow your plan religiously. Try not to take days off as this breaks the workout tempo. Memorize your designated plan so you wouldn’t have to glance at it every 5 minutes.

  • IT’S OK IF YOU DON’T HAVE A TRAINER: Figure out what you want to do (lose weight, practice running, build muscles etc.), set a goal and record your everyday routine. Ask help from gym-goers or just search online for the most effective workout routines. You will need to follow your self-created work out plan religiously.

  • BRING YOUR OWN SHOWER ESSENTIALS: I'll recommend you not to use the shower at all but if you need to go somewhere after working out then please don’t use the communal soaps and shampoos. Also, don't forget to bring your own towel!

  • DON’T CHECK YOUR WEIGHT EVERYDAY: This will just demotivate and dishearten you. Progress takes time. Check your weight after every two weeks instead. Also, your weight might increase right after you workout so don’t panic!

  • INTERACT: Interact with other people at the gym and learn from them. Talk to experienced trainers and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Make the most of this time!

  • IT’LL BE WORTH IT: I promise you. It will be exhausting, frustrating and stressful but once you achieve your pre-set goals, you’ll feel like a boss. Don’t give up because I know you can do it!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
