Winter in New England is imagined and anticipated with such negativity because the days are shorter, it's well, freezing, and there's no way you can go anywhere without 13 pounds of clothing on. However, I am one of those rare "winter people" whose heart flutters at the thought of the sudden temperature drop, the fresh snow, and the crisp breeze; it's so poetic! What's not to love? You know what you can do in the winter? Drink yummy warm beverages, wear comfortable sweaters, cuddle with all your friends, and celebrate tons of holidays! Now, as the humidity reaches its height this summer, I'd like to share with you some of the things us "winter people" experience in the summer:
1. We wonder/hate how it's possible for a human to produce so much sweat.
Summer...it's hot. So hot, that a lot of times, it takes extra effort to complete a typical task just to compensate for how hot the world has become. It takes a lot of effort to survive in the heat; you have to plan how to dress for each activity, and anticipate being gross and sweaty all day. Honestly, I'd much rather be in my sweaters, comfortably cool, not questioning why sweat is something humans produce from their bodies.
2. We incessantly scratch at yet another bug bite wondering why our legs have become a feast for the bugs.
Perhaps I am cursed, but I think bugs just love me. No matter where I go or how hard I try to avoid it, I will definitely get a bug bite. No, not just one bug bite, but probably 15 or 20 bug bites. It's as if one bug found me and invited its entire extended family along for the feast...it's like family bonding on a whole other level.
3. We want to go for a nice walk outside and be one with nature, but nope, it's too hot to exist out there.
Outdoor activities in the summer only have one end result: you being hot and tired and sweaty and wondering how long you have to sit in the sun before your book or your skin is set on fire.
4. Seriously questioning why everyone on the earth goes outside.
The park is full of people that usually never go to parks; everyone wants to go to the beach, or amusement park, or outdoor cafe. There's so much pressure to enjoy yourself that the summer can turn into a very stressful few months!
5. We wish we could put on our winter clothes again.
Summer clothes are tight, uncomfortable, and so revealing! All it does is give your legs ample opportunity to stick to each other...or to chairs...or grass...
6. We realize that keeping up with social norms is the absolute worst.
Feeling the pressure to shave parts of your body solely because other people will have to look at them? What's great about the winter is that no one expects you to conform to such silly norms.
7. We dream of snow when it's 97 degrees outside.
Sitting on the beach, hopelessly wondering when it will snow again.
8. We count down the days to when the humidity alone won't increase the size of your hair exponentially.
Humidity--causing hair to increase to 10 times its original size. If you suffer from this problem, please do not panic, just embrace the frizz and work that up-do.
9. We try to keep up with water intake to battle the ever-worsening humidity.
With excessive heat warnings in effect, it's important to drink a lot of water. Unfortunately, that means constantly keeping track of your water bottle and drinking from it all day long, which then also means endless bathroom breaks.
10. We brave the summer, eagerly awaiting the winter solstice!
Just turn on your air conditioner and keep waiting it out because the winter will be here soon to save us all from melting into puddles.
