10 Things to Tell Your Younger Sibling

A few words from the wise

10 Things to Tell Your Younger Sibling

There are always so many words left unsaid between siblings. I try not to be too cheesy, but since I can't say it in words, here it is in writing.

1. Mom and Dad are there to help you.

Yes, at times it will be frustrating, having them be on your back all the time. Trust me, once you’re out of the house, you’ll miss the constant nagging. Our parents are our rocks. Treat them well. You won't realize how much you really need them till you live away from them.

2. Break the rules, but not too many times!

I missed curfew a few times, or took the car out for too long a drive. Hey, if I survived, you will too. So take advantage of that!

3. Don’t change.

You’re in that awkward limbo stage right now where you have your own style, but also want to keep up with emerging trends. Don’t change who you are. And especially don’t change who you are for others. Popularity means nothing, you are your own, unique person.

4. Be kind.

Be kind to others, and you’ll receive the same kindness. What goes around comes around.

5. Avoid drama.

Drama creates tension. Try to stay out of it. Don't make a big deal out of nothing.

6. Be courageous.

Audition for the lead in the musical. Don’t be afraid of what others will think. You have the talent. Mom knows, Dad knows, and I know. Go put yourself out there and show them what you’re made of.

7. Don’t forget your roots.

We have been brought up with strong morals. Don’t lose them in the midst of all this craziness. Your ethics drive who you will become.

8. Don’t ever grow up.

Keep that sense of humor instilled in yourself forever. Laugh at dumb jokes. Take life as it comes, and when things get rough, never lose that beautiful smile of yours.

9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It shows that you have the strength to seek the unknown, a desire to learn, or just a bit of guidance to nudge you in the right direction.

10. I love you.

Just two years ago, we were on that hayride together. Three years ago, at that movie you begged me to see with you. And now, in different cities. Even though we’re miles apart, not a day goes by without thinking of you. I probably don’t say this enough, but I love you to the moon and back.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
