I have been an employee of Chipotle for the last three years, and I absolutely LOVE my job, the people I work with, and the general culture of the entire company. That goes without saying there are some days that I want to smush my head in the tortilla press. Here are some tips to make your next trip to Chipotle a little easier for you and the Chipotle team.
10. Figure out what you want before you get to the front of the line.
This includes being off of your phone, and being a decent human being to the person you are talking to.
9. Answer the simple questions with a simple answer.
Employee: “Hi how are you?”
Customer: “Bowl”
Maybe instead: “Hi, I’m good. Can I get a bowl please”
“White or brown rice,” I ask. Do not reply with, “chicken” as you have not been asked yet.
Also when asked “white or brown rice” do not reply with, “the cilantro lime rice” they both are prepared the same way. Brown rice is just a whole grain option.
8. Do not place eight orders while in line.
Believe it or not, Chipotle has a phone number (and an app) that you can use to place your order, and you can even pick up your order when convenient. This not only keeps you as a customer from having a mental breakdown when trying to keep everything together, but keeps the line moving quickly.
7. Do not reach over the glass.
Against popular belief, everyone that works at Chipotle can both hear and understand English. We get that you’re hungry, but I don’t want to have to throw away an entire pan of steak because you dropped your phone in it (yes, this has happened).
6. Do not ask for a tortilla on the side when you are at the cash register.
They do not have hot tortillas. This also slows down the line for your mundane request (by the way each tortilla is 500 calories). Please don’t also tell the first employee every single thing you want on your bowl/ burrito (refer to #9)
5. Bus your own table.
If the three (or more) trash cans weren't an indication that you clean up after yourself please take your food home. Also, don't take or throw away the red baskets.
4. Do not ask for a margarita to-go.
No, you cannot get a margarita to-go. This is not allowed. Drinking and driving is bad.
3. Don't ask for “a little extra meat”.
You either get the 4 ounce portion, or double. There's no in between. Yes, double meat costs extra.
2. Do not be rude to employees.
I don’t care how hangry you are. I have been here for 12 hours, and still have a smile on my face. Please don't scream at me over the fact that we have to go shred some fresh cheese for you. (Yes, this too has happened).
1. Do not comment on the size of your bowl or burrito.
I’ve seen bigger, and no one is impressed with the amount of food you are about to consume. You wouldn't go to McDonald’s and say “cram as many fries as you can into a small fry.”
With this new knowledge, you can now conquer all the things at Chipotle Mexican Grill.
Happy ordering!
