In the belief of reincarnation, an "old soul" is a term that refers to the soul's last portion of their journey here on earth. I have always been raised Catholic, so reincarnation isn't something I really acknowledged as being existent for most of my life. But, whether your religion accepts this as a faith or not, you may still show signs of this as a personality trait. Someone who is an old soul differs from the rest of their peers. Here's how.
1. You are almost too relaxed, even when you shouldn't be.
This is the biggest telltale sign that you are in fact, an old soul. You are laid back by nature. Confrontation doesn't come easy and seems to waste your time. You'd rather let things go because you know that there are more important things in life to be concerned about. When hit with bad news or dealing with being overwhelmed, you almost feel like you've done this before and always find a way to deal with the situation in a calm manner.
2. You have a brutally honest outlook on life.
You don't hold back when it comes to accepting things in life (whether it be good or bad). If you have something to say to someone, it will come out almost immediately. But, because of their natural tendency to just say it like it is, their feelings might be perceived as abrupt and unexpected and can scare people away.
3. You have more nights in than out.
Old souls kind of skip the "party phase." You already know that big crowds aren't your thing. You like the idea of cuddling up in blankets and sipping on tea at night more than being squished in a crowd of sweaty people with loud electronic music. Now, this isn't always the case, but if old souls do go out, they would very much rather be at a classy bar with options to sit, dance and mingle, and not a mess of people grinding on each other.
4. Dating someone new isn't something you look forward to.
Dating doesn't come easy to an old soul. This is because old souls are independent by nature, but also has a little bit to do with them being way too picky. You carefully chose who you decide to start dating because you want to make a wise decision.
Modern dating is confusing to the old soul. Relationships now are way more confusing than before. There is never a fine line between whether or not you are exclusive or not, because you don't really want something serious (because you are young). Yet, you get overwhelmed by the idea of "playing the field," so you hope the other feels the same way. Because of this, oId souls enjoy the old-fashioned way of dating and admire men who show chivalry. They love having doors opened for them and instead of getting the, "Wanna hang out and watch Netflix?" text, they would rather be asked to go out somewhere with a plan.
After a few sour relationships, old souls might take a step back and not make much effort anymore. This is the downfall of being an old soul; they naturally enjoy being alone and don't realize when someone that might be worth it comes along.
5. People often think your older than you actually are.
This is a big one for old souls. You always get the "you are very mature for your age" comment. You take pride in it though, because this quality has more pros than cons. Ever since you were young, you made friends that were always a few more grades ahead of you in school. You were the first to know about things that might have been inappropriate for your age to know about. Even as a young adult, old souls naturally make friends that have a few years on them. This even carries on when dating because almost always go for people who are older than them.
6. Your friends usually come to you to vent and ask for advice.
With being an old soul comes with some naturally stored wisdom that people quickly realize. You probably give good advice without even realizing it. Your friends like to ask you for your opinions. When they are upset, they like to call you up and vent because they know you will like to listen and help. You like helping people and have a natural way of telling people with honesty how they should solve problems. You don't beat around the bush, but tell it like it is.
7. You get along with all of your friends' parents.
For some odd reason, you are able to hold a full conversation with your friends' parents for hours if you could. Your friends' parents have definitely told you about how polite you are. When approaching someone with authority, you have a natural way with words, and manners come easily to you. You enjoy listening to people of different generations talk about life, because for some reason you are able to relate even though you are so young.
8. You listen to more music from way before you were even born than what is on the radio now.
You have playlists with songs from multiple decades, but you still keep a playlist with recent music for when you are with your friends. You might listen to classical music while studying. You find yourself listening to artists who were way before your time. When your parents hear you listening to music, you may have heard them say something along the lines of, "This played at my junior prom!"
9. You talk noticeably softer and slower than everyone else.
Due to being someone with a natural laid back personality, you find it hard to speak with a perky and fast tone of voice. You take your time when forming sentences and never really yell at people.
10. You really like to be alone.
This is so true for old souls. For all of your life, you have been independent. You value time to yourself, and sometimes you really don't want to talk to anyone for a while. Sometimes others think that you're avoiding them or ignoring them, but really, you just don't feel like interacting sometimes. You often find yourself daydreaming and thinking in depth about life. You can be percieved as being detached at times. This isn't as much about being anti-social as it is about naturally finding yourself at peace.
If you identify with the old soul, you are someone who is mature beyond your years. You always have well-thought-out things to say without really trying. You make decisions with wisdom. While some things may be more difficult, you still have a one-up on your friends when it comes to being mature and acting older than you are.
