It's that time again, moving back into our dorms and situating ourselves back into our college routine. We pack up, we unpack, we settle in, and even if we have done it before it never goes as smoothly as we wish. We are all familiar with the annoyances of move-in day and I thought I would highlight a few that happened to me this year.
1. Before you pack up the car, you say a prayer it will all fit
I don't know how boys are, but when girls get a free excuse to redo their room decor we buy everything possible at TJ Maxx, Home Goods, and Target. By the time I need to pack up the car, I have bought every size mason jar available and multiple containers of shampoo. This year I brought an expedition to school, and I could barely see out of the back when I had finally loaded up all of my unnecessary “school supplies.”
2. And when it doesn’t (which it never does), you have to eliminate unnecessary things.
When a very important laundry basket full of bathroom supplies fails to fit in the car, half of those mason jars and a half a dozen posters need to be left at home. I get so caught up in the decorations in my room, I forget that the necessities for the upcoming nine months must be first in the list of importance. So when I struggled to fit my mom and dog in the front seat of my car, I realized some of my winter clothes didn't need to join me for the ninety-degree weather in August and September.
3. Sweating more than necessary in front of all your classmates while unpacking.
After finally getting the key to my new dorm room, climbing multiple flights of stairs, my fellow classmates got some smelly first impressions of me after coming back from summer vacation. Once I finished moving everything in, I already had a load of clothes to wash.
4. Parents try to make friends for you.
Even when it is my sophomore year of college, my parents always try to talk to every parent/student we pass on campus. As if I don't already know everyone on my small private college campus. Therefore, my parents bring more attention to my overheated face and sweaty shirt.
5. Trying to impress your roommate.
Girls have a silent competition as to who can get more new clothes over summer and who is tanner, leading a silent battle between me and my roommate. Even being best friends for over a year, we compete, but we laugh about it afterwards. Like when she compliments my makeup and I claim I only took a couple minutes to put it on but in reality I took 20.
6. You can never find your scissors.
Along with all of the mason jars comes packaged fridges, Keurigs and microwaves, which can only be opened with scissors. I always seem to put my scissors in the hardest to find spot. So then my new dorm key becomes my scissors.
7. You realize how much you forgot at home.
I never forget my unnecessary items at home, but I always forget my toothbrush or my deodorant. With all of my forgetfulness comes another grocery list.
8. Make a huge list of things to buy at Target/Walmart after you’ve unpacked.
Most everything I need after going through all I packed is dorm food and cleaning supplies. So as tradition goes, my roommate and I took a long trip to Walmart and buy everything that I was too lazy to buy at home and pack.
9. After finishing your room, seeing someone else’s room makes you want to change everything.
My suite mates all have an act for dorm decor, so after plugging in the last lamp and putting down my last rug, I walk into my suite mate’s room, turn around and rearrange everything with all those "new" ideas I just gathered. There goes that girl rivalry again. No matter how much preparation goes into my dorm, I will always think it needs more, and so goes life.
10. And finally, falling asleep sad at the end of the day because you miss your dog.
Most cliches would say that college students either spend the night hanging out with their friends when they get back to school or they get homesick. I fall asleep missing my bulldog and shihpoo.
