10 Things You Should Do Before Your Freshman Year of College
USFSM

Before I started my Freshman year of college, I thought I had everything together. I felt prepared for college, but little did I know I was far from it. As the year went on, I found myself stressed and rushing to do things I should have done months before. If you are about to begin your Freshman year, follow this list to ease the pressure that comes with starting college. Not only will it make your Freshman Year less stressful, you will also feel like you actually have your life together.

1. Find a job

If you are able to get a job before college starts it'll be much easier for you to go on all the fun adventures you want to go on. If you learn to save properly, your next four years will be fun and financially free!

2. Figure out what you really need to bring...not your whole closet

I definitely overestimated how much space I would have in my dorm. I tried to bring everything I owned, and that just doesn't work. A good trick is to wash the clothes in your laundry basket, and bring a few of your favorite outfits. You will find that you probably wear the same t-shirt three days in a row....

3. Go to Ratemyprofessors and read other student's experience with that professor

Before college, I didn't know what ratemyprofessors was but it is now my favorite tool. ratemyprofessors allows students to review their professors and classes; therefore, you know what to expect for the coming year. I also use ratemyprofessors before picking classes to avoid getting a bad professor.

4. Don't take an 8am

You'll regret it, I promise you.

5. Learn about events you might want to attend

Attending events on campus is a great way to meet people, and learn about different opportunities going on around campus like volunteering and clubs

6. Find your way around campus

Use the few days before classes begin to figure out where your classes are. It will definitely save you the embarrassment of showing up to class late because you couldn't find the lecture hall.

7. Meet/talk to your roommate

You're going to be living with this person for a whole year, best start off on a good note (unlike mine).

8. Join your class facebook page

Joining my class page has saved my life many a times. Not only is it a great way to find out about events on campus, but you can also find people who are in your classes and start study groups.

9. Look for your textbooks on Amazon

Amazon is usually cheaper than your university's bookstore, and college students are all about saving that money

10. Spend time with your family

You may not be home for a while, so spend as much time as you can with your family while you can. Homesickness is too real.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
