10 Things I Need To Thank My Roommates For

Because you had to do so much more than just live with me.

10 Things I Need To Thank My Roommates For
Meredith Ellis

One of the most exciting things about going off to college, in my opinion, was getting to live with someone that I wasn't related to. However, it was also the most terrifying thought; imagining someone else having to experience all of my weird habits that my family had always been forced to put up with was kind of a nightmare. So here's to the golden ones, the "froomies," who not only deal with me, but do it with love.

1. Being okay with my mountain of clothes.

It's two weeks before finals, and the LAST thing on my mind is what my room looks like. Amidst the studying, shopping for groceries, and trying to get in all the social events I can, a large pile of dirty laundry (or clean, honestly who even knows anymore) has accumulated right in front of my bed, and it is nothing less than a small tower. Thanks for not complaining, and even if you did complain, thanks for understanding.

2. Hugging me while I cried...for the third time that week.

So, I can be a little emotional. After spending hours attempting to keep it all together in front of my friends, I burst into the room and see you sitting on the couch, and become a mess of tears right next to you. Congrats, you get to be the shoulder I cry on constantly.

3. Sharing your food with me (even when you weren't aware of it).

This is my confession: Yes, I did eat the last of the Cheez-its. Let's be honest, I didn't keep much food in the room, and even when I did, yours looked SO much better.

4. Being my primary fashion consultants.

If we're being honest, there are days where I can't tell my right shoe from my left. That's why I have you guys, and thank goodness I like your fashion sense.

5. Being my moms away from home.

There are so many days where all I need is a hug from my mom, and you guys fill that void so very well. There are also days where I need someone to tell me to get my act together, go to class, and clean my room, and I know I can always count on you guys for that, too.

6. Loving me despite my weird quirks.

Thanks for not running away screaming when you walked in on me dancing and singing in my underwear to Beyoncé's new album. I just can't resist my inner dancing queen, so I'm very thankful that you guys love me for who I am.

7. Helping me live out my childhood dream of having a sleepover every night.

No, there weren't any pillow fights, and we didn't order pizza every night. But we often chatted until 1 AM, giggled about boys, and ate junk food together, and I couldn't have asked for a better semester-long slumber party.

8. Taking care of me when I was sick.

I'm sorry that I didn't mention before I moved in that I was a hypochondriac with an immune deficiency. Thanks for bringing me water and pretending with me that I was on my death bed when I thought that I actually was.

9. Letting my friends sleep on the couch.

Movie night is over, and it's a long trip across the hall to my best friend's room. Fortunately, I have the best roommates ever and a comfy couch that makes the perfect overnight bed for my sleepy friend.

10. Never letting me leave the room without feeling loved.

I'm leaving the room, the door is squeaking shut, no one has said a word, and then all of the sudden, I hear a "love you!" shouted from the back room. Whether it's right before a 9 AM class, or late at night while we're all going off of pure energy drinks and caffeine, I never fail to hear an "I love you" from one of my roommates. And when the going gets tough and the semester is coming to a close, sometimes that's just enough to keep you going. So here's a HUGE thank you to my wonderful roommates, I couldn't have made it this whole semester without you by my side.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
