Family. A word that means more to me than anything in this world. Mine is a compilation of individuals who are loving, faithful, unique, funny, intelligent and all around wonderful people. My family also just so happens to be pretty large. My mom has four siblings and is from a small town with a population of 1,256. My grandparents had quite a few siblings, which led to me having a lot of relatives -- I'm probably related to everyone in my mom's hometown in some way or another. I absolutely love my big family of more than 8+ aunts and uncles and 13+ cousins. I wouldn't trade a single one of them for anyone else. Here are some of my favorite things -- and struggles -- about being part of a giant family.
1. Preparing for the holiday celebrations is no joking matter.
"Who's going to cook the turkey? Who's bringing desert? How many tables do we need? Don't forget your present for white elephant!"
2. Family weddings are a blast!
My family literally takes over weddings. We're always having a good time socializing and getting down on the dance floor.
3. It's really hard to keep track of everyone's ages. That moment when you discover your youngest cousin isn't six anymore is so real.
4. Going to a family reunion is a chance for you to meet another person you're related to.
"Honey, this is your second cousin twice removed on your dad's side." Wait, what?
5. During a family gathering, there's no such thing as alone time.
Need some peace and quiet? Yeah, you won't get it.
6. There are no secrets in the family. Everyone knows each others business.
7. You have to block off rows of seats in the auditorium for the entire family to attend your concerts.
8. Introducing your significant other to your family for the first time is extremely stressful.
With so many people for your S.O. to keep track of, there's no chance they won't be overwhelmed.
9. Trying to take a family picture is a massive challenge.
Getting everyone in one place is a chore, not to mention getting everyone to smile.
10. Sleepovers mean fighting over who gets to sleep on the couches and beds, and it's not uncommon that you end up on the floor.
Although sometimes being a member of a large family can be challenging, those of us who are wouldn't have it any other way.
