When I was younger, all I would talk about was how excited I was to grow up and work at my favorite clothing store (Abercrombie at the time). I thought that working retail would be this amazing and glamorous job and that everyone would be super jealous of me and my great clothing discounts.
As I got older though, the thought of working retail became less and less desirable to me. While it wasn't my first choice anymore, I became desperate for cash and decided that I would have to suck it up, which is what led to me working at Victoria's Secret. I have now worked there for two years as a seasonal worker and I honestly believe that I know the ins and outs of retail. While working in a clothing store may not be as glamorous as I used to think it would be, it is still a great job and there are many things that only retail workers will understand.
- The pain of not being able to make plans ahead of time, because you have a call-in shift and have no clue if you will have to work that day.
- The fact that regardless of where you work, the customers get 50 times meaner and crankier around the holidays.
- The frustrated feeling you get when a customer doesn't believe that you are actually out of the item that they're looking for.
- That one annoying customer who tries on 20 things and buys none of them, leaving them all scattered around the dressing room for you to put back.
- The fear you have of losing your fitting room key.
- The children that come in your store who's only actual intention is to annoy the sales associates.
- The amount you dread having to do floor sets and set up for big sales.
- The fact that you end up spending more money than you ever would've before you worked there, because you've convinced yourself that your discount makes everything more acceptable to buy.
- The amount of hatred you feel towards Black Friday and the inability to ever enjoy it again.
- The fact that the most popular songs are ruined for you because you have to listen to them on repeat every time you work.
While working retail may not be all that it's cracked up to be, it can be a lot of fun (besides for the holiday season) and it has made me appreciate clothes being folded and put away much more.
For anyone who's currently applying for a retail job, all I have to say to you is: May the odds be ever in your favor.
