Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. Imagine how hard it is for latinos to remember every single relative... especially during the holidays. But family for us means a lot. We might fight, we might get mad and we might stop talking to each other for a while, but nothing can compare to the feeling you get when it's noche buena, and your entire family gets together to celebrate it, and to eat (let's be honest, it's all about the food) . Being part of a latino family is quite unique, and there are a things that only latinos can relate to during the holidays:
1. You find it weird when your non-latino friends say that they celebrate Christmas on the 25th.
2. You know that family reunions aren't only for the family but instead they're an open invitation for the neighbors, and their families, and the dogs, and the cats.
3. While all of your friends go to the Bahamas and Europe for vacation, you go back to your homeland, or you stay home... helping your parents clean the house.
4. For most latinos, Christmas isn't about opening presents, but instead, it's about going to church, and eating a ton of food, and hugging people at midnight.
5. When you hear the word "party", you don't think about the amount of alcohol that there will be, you think about all of the delicious food that you will get to eat, because holidays for latinos are just excuses to eat as much as you can.
6. Most people lose weight when they come home from college. You, on the contrary, gain 20 extra pounds in a week.
7. The best is when people you haven't met hug you and kiss you, and start telling you stories of when you were little. People who apparently are related to you, but you had no idea existed.
8. Santa doesn't mean anything to us. For most latinos, Christmas is all about Jesus and the three kings.
9. If your family is catholic, there is a very big chance that you were part of La Pastorela. Probably ended up being an angel, or a shepherd.
10. When your tia asks what you want for Christmas and your mom answers with "no necesita nada".
