There’s nothing wrong with being a positive, optimistic and trusting person. In fact, I honestly believe that the world would be a much better place if more people were able to look on the bright side more often. I, however, am not one of those people, and I'm pretty sure if there were a literal bright side, I'd only be able to stay for so long before my eyes started to hurt.
Constant positivity and affirmation can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when you're being told to smile and you're really not in the mood for it.
But there's no need to force it or fake it. Sometimes accepting the negative, the pessimism and the cynicism (to the point of mockery even, which is my favorite) can sound, ironically, like a fantastic time. And I'm here to tell you that it totally can be! It's a time to vent, to be bitter, and to make fun of the sucky-ness that is real life. As a flawed human being in an ever imperfect universe, it'll be good for you.
So embrace the bitterness once in a while! Enjoy it with a friend and embrace it together. That's what I like to do.
Now for fun, as a fairly cynical person myself, here are 10 things I love about being around my other cynical friends.
1. You give each other that “look” when someone says something you find both stupid.
Bonus points if you two sit together quietly and start observing how everyone else is acting around you.2. You don’t have to filter your sense of humor when you joke around about things that would otherwise be considered too dark or obscene.
And though you're only being half ironic, the truth makes it funnier.
3. Complaining about how everything sucks is a regular conversation.
Best part is, they won’t try to fix your problems or bother with the silver linings because, no, you don’t need to cheer up. You’re stating facts. And they know that.
4. So instead, they’ll often respond with a satisfying “I know, right?”
Thus reassuring that nothing’s wrong with you; everything just actually sucks.
5. You don’t have to feel bad for thinking that the one person you know who’s always-a-joyful-burst-of-sunshine-for-no-damn-reason is annoying.
Because you both do.6. You have someone else who sees it not as “negative”, but as “practical” or “realistic”, like you do.
Because sometimes you have to remember that to every pro there’s a con, and that low expectations will never disappoint you.7. Those conversations that get super real, real quick that other people might find upsetting don’t get either of you down ‘cause what else is new?
You can’t get any lower when you’re both living at rock bottom.8. Neither of you feel obligated to even have those super-real conversations because you both have already accepted that the world is a horrible place a long time ago.
At some point you’re just repeating what they already know, so why bother?9. Sarcasm is a shared language.
Oh great indeed.
