My nephew is the reason I try to be a better person, sister, daughter, friend, and, most importantly, aunt, every single day.

There's this little boy who stole my heart, and he calls me "aunt Sissy."

I never imagined that I could ever love anyone more than I love my siblings, and I honestly mean that. They're my whole entire world and the only reason I want to be a better person every day. Let me just say that when my older sister gave me a nephew, though... my whole world changed.

Instead of just having a little sister that looked up to me, I now had this baby. This pure and innocent little baby with the sweetest smile and softest eyes that would eventually see just how bad I could mess up, any given second of his life. I am not perfect by any means, but I knew that in that moment, at 2:14 PM to be exact, I had to try harder than I ever had before.

So here are ten things that I learned becoming an aunt:

1. I am definitely NOT ready for a baby, or any kid of my own.

You’re welcome, mama. It’s totally true when they say it’s the best birth control. My nephew is pretty close to perfect, but I couldn’t do it. I’m glad it’s my sister and not me.

2. Even though I’m not ready for my own kids, I do have some motherly instincts.

I say that because my nephew is my number one concern, every second of my day. Just imagine how bad it’s going to be when I do have my own.

3. I'm a pretty nice person, but if you mess with my mama bear and cub, I will show you heartless.

Don’t mess with my nephew, to begin with, and definitely don’t come at my sister either. She can handle herself, but I’ll be glad to handle you on my own time as well… even if I’m just giving you a piece of my mind.

4. It's possible to feel a different type of love, like a feeling you can't put into words.

Like I said earlier, I never thought I could love anyone more than I love my siblings. It’s not even that I love my nephew more, but it’s a feeling that I can’t describe. It’s like a new type of love on a different level that I’ve never felt before until he entered my life.

5. It's impossible to have a conversation and not mention my nephew.

I’m that crazy aunt who obsesses over everything my nephew does, and I will forever brag about him. Don’t worry, I’ll have multiple pictures and a video to show you of him as well.

6. As selfish as you may be at the moment, it magically changes... well it did for me.

Instead of spending the extra money you have this week on yourself, you think about what your nephew (and/or niece) may possibly need (and most definitely want) next.

7. You quickly realize that there IS sunshine on a cloudy day.

I can be having what I feel like is the worst day of my life, but as soon as I see those big brown eyes and that sweet smile, I melt into a pile of emotions where my nephew just wipes up all of the bad from my day.

8. I never thought time went by fast enough until my nephew.

I try to spend every second that I can with my nephew because time DOES go by so quick. Sometimes, it actually makes me sad that he’s growing so fast. I’m not prepared for that yet. I wish time would slow down now.

9. I would do ANYTHING for a tiny human being who hasn't been in my life except for a very small portion of it.

I literally mean it when I say that I would take a bullet for someone who has only been in my life since September 18, 2016… but there again, I’d do anything for that baby.

10. Lastly, I hope my sister can be the bad guy because how am I ever supposed to look at that sweet face and tell him "NO"?

Oh yeah, that’s right, I won’t ever be able too. Good luck Lauren, you’re on your own when it comes time for that fun.

So if you do have siblings and you’re not an aunt or uncle yet, just wait. If you don’t have siblings then go find the next best thing to one because you don’t want to miss out on this kind of love.

My nephew is the reason I try to be a better person, sister, daughter, friend, and, most importantly, aunt, every single day. I struggle a lot of days to do any better, but I know he loves me regardless. That’s what keeps me pushing through.

I can’t wait until the day comes that there’s more than just one nephew in my life because I’m going to be on cloud nine with all of the love. My nephew has made me appreciate my older sister more and love her a whole new way, so I can’t wait to do the same thing with my little sister.

Love always, a crazy and obsessed “Aunt Sissy.”

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
