In a perfect world everybody would be from the South, or at least have a few characteristics that coincide with that of the South. People would all have southern charm, girls would have a lady-like appeal to them, and all boy would be gentleman. Too bad we all know that this just is not reality. But here are a few things that are 99.99 percent (give or take the occasional Southern hater) true if you live in the South.
1. You have a big family.
To make it even more southern, if you live in a small town everyone in your town is somehow related. But let's face it, even if you are not from a small town you still manage to meet someone new at each family reunion.
2. It is a buggy, NOT a shopping cart.
There is really no explanation for this, it just is what it is.
3. Milo's Famous Sweet Tea is your saving grace.
No matter how many times you tell someone how good it is, they just won't understand until they taste it. It's not like normal sweet tea, it's a taste you can't explain. You want everyone to experience this wonderful sweet tea and you will do anything to defend this taste to the haters.
4. Chicken, most definitely, can be eaten with biscuits.
The idea of people not experiencing a chicken biscuit makes you squirm. You don't know how to handle it when people say that they've never had one. You could possibly eat one every meal, if acceptable.
5. Everything is better fried.
Fried chicken. Fried okra. Fried bologna. Fried mac N cheese bites. Fried ice cream. Everything.
6. It's coke, not pop.
There's shouldn't even be a debate over the this.
7. It's always "yes, ma'am" and "no, ma'am."
Growing up, the ma'ams and sirs were not an option. You were raised on manners and you can tell when people weren't. Grandma still hits you when you don't greet her with manners, it's just what she does.
8. You were born with a monogram on your chest.
I'm really unsure how this came to be, but it has stuck. If you are from the south, your socks are monogrammed, your shoes, your shirts, and your sleepwear. It is a phenomenon that I don't think will ever be stopped.
9. "Bless your heart" is most definitely not a compliment.
Unless you are referencing someone's sickness, a woman "blessing your heart" is most likely going to be her sarcastic way of saying "you're an idiot." It is something that people from the North just do not understand and southerners will take advantage of that any chance they can.
10. Just because you are below the Mason-Dixon line, does NOT mean you are southern.
Being southern is a way of living. It is respect and understanding that your elders mean something to you. It is family time, even if you don't share the same blood as the person. It is respect for American and ALL those who have served for her.
Even if you don't agree with all of these points, the South is a world of it's own and you should definitely be proud to say you are a southerner.
