High school teaches us a lot; history, math, English, science. What do all these things have in common? They are all things considered to be book smart. Teachers in school failed to add some basic life skills into their curriculum that would help the students later in life. Here are some examples:
1. How To Make A Doctor’s Appointment
I was extremely awkward the first time I made my own appointment with my eye doctor. I was overly concerned I was doing it wrong and was lucky I always kept my insurance card in my wallet. Then when it came to ordering my contacts, there was a whole new level of panicked.
2. How To Get Your Own Insurance
I am lucky enough to still be eligible to be on my father’s insurance plan, but that is only a temporary thing. When I can no longer be on his insurance, I am on my own. Searching for the best policy with the best deal is confusing and difficult, even for someone who knows what they are doing.
3. How To Get A Loan For A Car
Does anyone in their late teens early twenties know how to do this? I don’t.
4. How To Actually Buy A Car
Always bring someone who knows something about cars and have them check the engine and look underneath. If not, have a mechanic look at it. You may find yourself in a jam if you don’t.
5. How To Buy A House
I recently watched my sister and brother-in-law go through this struggle. I don’t envy them and am extremely happy I rent.
6. How Little I Actually Need To Balance My Checkbook
What is most banks now have apps to help you monitor your financial spending and because of this balancing your checkbook is a little outdated.
7. There Are Websites That Help You With Your Taxes
H&R Block, Turbotax, and more. I never need to do my taxes by hand or hire an accountant. They aren’t as intimidating as people think.
8. How To Get Utilities In Your Name And How To Pay Them
When I first moved into my apartment, I was completely on my own for what utilities I needed to put in my name, how to do it, and where to pay them.
9. What To Look For When Renting Your First Apartment
There is so much more to look for than just how an apartment looks. You need to consider what utilities are included and the amenities they offer as well. Then there is how much rent is per month or if it is per head or not, where it’s located, if you can get a roommate if you need to.
10. There Are Options Other Than College
You can find decent jobs without a college degree and still make a decent salary and trade schools are also a good option. Jobs like electricians and plumbers have a higher salary due to demand of employees.
Schools tend to not teach these things because they expect our parents too. But in truth, parents don’t spend a lot of time teaching us this stuff because they expect our schools too. So that leaves an entire generation of people who are completely clueless about this stuff.
