Coming home from summer can be a tough time for some. You're no longer independent, and that can be hard for some. There are, however, many perks and annoying responsibilities that happens when you come home. Here are 10 things that happen when you come back home from college for summer break.
1. Cash flow begins
You’ve been out of work for a while now, barely scrapping enough money to get by. Then you come home from college, your summer job starts, parents buy your food, and life gets a little less stressful. When you come home from college for the summer, your bank account grows in size and you begin to save it or better yet spend it.
2. Your dog becomes your best friend again
You’ve been gone for the past four months and haven’t seen that furry companion in a while. Then as soon as you get home, bam, that dog is attached at your hip again. It’s following you all around the house, never leaving your side because he’s afraid you’ll leave him again. And just because you don’t want to leave him, you take him on every trip you take, no matter if its to the grocery store or a road trip to Chicago.
3. Chores start
You get home and within seconds of walking in that door your mom says she wants the dishes cleaned, carpet vacuumed, and wood dusted. For a split second you think you should turn around and walk straight back out of that door. Then you realize your parents just paid for your year at college, so it’s the least you could do.
4. No more eating whenever you want
There’s no more midnight trips to McDonald's because you’ve been at the library since 5 o’clock. You’re on a strict eating schedule, and that means family dinners at 6 p.m. and there’s no eating before dinner. However, you do miss family dinners when you’re away at college. Let’s be honest when’s the last time you actually ate in the caf having a wholesome conversation and not scrolling through your phone?
5. Thinking you have homework, but you really don’t
There will be so many times throughout the summer where you’ll wake up halfway through the night worried that you didn’t turn in that homework assignment only to realize it’s summer and there’s no homework to be done.
6. Traveling begins
Summer is when the big travel plans come together. You end up going to Europe for a month or flying out to Cali to visit friends. There’s never time during the school year so travel plans are reserved for summer.
7. See all the family
There will be family reunions left and right. You’ll see great uncle Joe twice removed and he’ll say, “I haven’t seen you since you were this tall." You’ll have lunch with grandma and grandpa and go shopping with your cousins. Family time is reserved for summer.
8. You realize your parents lived without you
The first night you get back from college, your parents will tell you that they’re going out with friends and there are leftovers in the fridge. You always think that your parents haven’t been doing anything since you left last fall, but in reality, they’ve been partying it up and now that you’re home they can stay out later because they don’t have to come home early to let the dog out.
9. Typical college questions are asked
You stop by the local Kroger in your hometown and run into a mom of your friend in high school. She asks the same questions that everyone else asks: What’s your major, do you have a boyfriend, how are your classes…blah blah blah.
10. Your family becomes closer than ever
The real perk of coming home in summer is that your family becomes closer than ever. You’ve missed them more than you can put into words, and you’re so happy that you’re back. You’ll go out to the bars together and watch soccer games in the morning. Life is good.
