Saint Mary's College: "Educating Women Since 1844"

After wrapping up my first year at Saint Mary's, I can say I am pretty much educated on all things "Smick-like." Now, as a certified "Smick Chick" of Saint Mary's College, I have compiled a list of everything that most of my fellow Belles and I know all too well.

1. Brunch is the Best Meal

No offense Sodexo but breakfast, lunch, and dinner, pretty much suck. However, your brunch for some ungodly reason is delicious. Although it is only served on weekends it fulfills its purpose after a long night out and allows everyone to reminisce on the night before.

2. The French Cross Necklace is a Must

Smicks are proud to be Smicks. Wearing anything with a French Cross on it is just one way of showing it. And wearing a French Cross necklace is just a popular way of showing you are a woman of Saint Mary's College.

3. Personal Pizza Fridays

Although the dining hall is never popping on a Friday night, the line to make a personal pizza is. It's honestly better than the actual pizza they serve on a daily basis and it is just another thing to look forward to every week.

4. Constantly Obsessing Over Your Class Ring

Although I am not able to purchase my class ring yet, I still obsess over everyone else's. They are insanely beautiful and unite all Belles no matter the age. We love our class rings so much there is an Instagram account for them called "@ringsdoingthings."

5. Zahm

The all-male dorm everyone at Notre Dame hates and the dorm that all Smicks love. Every Belle has been in this infamous dorm at one point in their four-year run at Saint Mary's. So shout out to Zahm for throwing the ultimate "dorm party."

6. Feve Thursdays

Thirsty Thursdays? You mean Feve Thursdays! Smicks love to go out and have a good time and this is one of our hot spots.

7. Sluttle Times

The term "Sluttle" refers to the bus that runs through Saint Mary's and Notre Dame's campuses. However, only Smicks are allowed to call it the "Sluttle" if anyone else does it's considered an insult. Anyways, any true Smick has the schedule down pact.

8. Singing Your Heart Out at Midnight Breakfast

Midnight Breakfast is a time-honored tradition at Saint Mary's where professors serve you breakfast at midnight on the first day of finals week. Although it is no High School Musical, everyone stands on their chairs and sings their heart out to Beyoncé chart toppers. It's a Belle of a time.

9. Having Papa Johns and Jimmy Johns on Speed Dial

Each semester I am pretty sure I spend at least half of my munch money or more ordering Papa Johns or Jimmy Johns.

10. Saint Mary's was the Best Decision You've Ever Made

"The Avenue Will Lead You Home"

In saying all of this I would not want to attend any other college. As I have only completed my first year, my decision to attend Saint Mary's College was the best one I could have ever made. I have made friendships that are going to last a lifetime and I am receiving an education like no other. I could not imagine being anywhere else. but Smickville.

As Always,

Go Belles

and

BELLE YEAH

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
