How often do you see a college student playing guitar and enjoying time with their friends in movies and pictures? Most would say that it’s pretty common to see, because music brings people together! Whether you’ve been playing since you were old enough to hold a guitar or you just started playing to impress the cutie in your class, you can relate to at least one of the following!
- “Do You Know ‘Wonderwall’?” Depending on what group you hang around, there is one song that everyone knows and asks you to play. Oasis’ crowd favorite, “Wonderwall,” Darius Rucker’s rendition of “Wagon Wheel”, or Green Day’s punk-classic, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” all fall under this category. If you don’t know your group’s go-to song, you soon will. Trust me.
- Practice makes perfect. Whether it be your dorm room, an abandoned amphitheater, or the campus walkway you will find the perfect place to practice. Some may find that a quieter location, such as a dorm room, is easier and more private; however, the options are endless. If you’re just starting out on the guitar, you may want to practice alone; but if you’re a well-seasoned “guitar-hero,” then you may feel comfortable practicing in public. Do whatever is comfortable for you. When you’re ready, show someone your hard work!
- Finding Music is your forte. Are you next Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, or Taylor Swift? You won’t know till you try. However, finding music can sometimes be hard. What do the fans want to hear? When it comes to picking music to learn how to play and cover, learn the songs you listen to the most. It will be easier to learn, and you can even add some of your own style to it (it is a cover after all!)
- America’s Got Talent, so do you! Everyone has talent, why not show it! When given the opportunity to audition for a talent show, take it. You won’t regret it. Audition and give it all you’ve got. When performing onstage, you get a natural high and not want to stop. . The electricity from the audience will put you on cloud nine.
- Six Strings and Espresso Go Great Together. If a talent show isn’t your speed, try a coffee shop open mic. They are smaller and less formal. Perfect for someone who is learning and/or wants to perform more!
- “Please play for me! Come on!” When someone learns you play guitar, they will want you to play them for you even if it takes a whole lot of begging. “Please, just one more song,” and “Maybe just the chorus?” are two sayings you will soon grow annoyed by (aside from “Can you play ‘Wonderwall’?”)
- Life of the party. When people ask you to play, it tends to be in a larger group of people or party. You start playing your favorite song, and then everyone jumps in at the chorus. This will definitely make memories and bring people closer.
- Musicians Duet better. Playing with other people can sometimes be a struggle, but it’s always fun. You will learn new things and make great friends through music. Try to find music that is on both of your experience levels. Try your hand at some different genres too!
- Everyone is a guitarist. In the music community, it can sometimes feel like everyone is a guitarist. This can make it easy when looking for someone to play with; however, it can be tough when auditioning for shows. Overall, the music community is there with open arms for guitarists.
- You fall in love with what you do. It’s true. After years of playing guitar, you fall head over heels in love with it (and with your guitar too!) It’s sometimes a pain to play, but the outcome is amazing. Music becomes part of your soul!
