Well, you’ve decided to take the plunge and study abroad, but it’s a totally new experience and you’re nervous about how it’s going to go. You’re asking yourself questions like, “Will I get lost?” and “What should I pack?” Don’t worry you’ve made a great decision that will potentially change your life. You’re venturing away from the norm and you will be making great memories and gaining new experiences. But to ease the worry, here's a list to help you get through any pre-departure jitters.
1. Research.
Look up the different customs and mannerisms, so you don't offend any of the locals in the country you’re visiting.
2. Look up the weather.
Before you pack your whole closet, look up the weather for the duration of your trip. This will Eliminate any unnecessary items. Plus, if your airline charges for checked bags, you can save money and buy extra souvenirs.
3. Look up the facts.
Check with the airline to see if you have to pay for your checked bag, what the weight limit is, and what you can and cannot bring onboard.
4. Make a packing list.
It’s better to take the time and go through what it is you will need; this way you avoid forgetting something simple, like your toothbrush.
5. Be organized.
Keep folders of sorts containing any items you may need such as your passport, plane tickets, class itinerary, etc.
6. Order your textbooks ahead of time.
Once your teacher sends out the book list, make it a priority to order your books so that they arrive on time before it's time for you to take off.
7. Get a head start on assignments.
Try looking ahead at the syllabus to see if there is anything you can complete before you land. This way you won't feel overwhelmed when classes start.
8. Avoid jet lag.
Try to avoid a nap at all costs so you don’t get jet lagged. If your plane is arriving in the morning, sleep on the plane so when you land you are ready for the day. If your plane arrives at night, stay up on the plane, so you can sleep and wake up the next day feeling fine.
9. Unpack ASAP.
It may not seem important but the sooner you unpack and get settled in, the more at home you'll start to feel. Plus living out of a suitcase may lead to feeling homesick. Not to mention it can get messy since you’ll probably start to fling clothes looking for something specific and then stuffing them back into your suitcase afterwards.
10. It’s okay to be homesick.
Bring with you pictures of your family and friends. Don’t be embarrassed to pack a stuffed animal you may have otherwise left at home. You most likely won’t be the only one bringing a guaranteed friend with them!
Most importantly, remember to have fun! It's a temporary experience with memories to last a lifetime. Appreciate every step on your new journey, so you can get the most out of it. Happy travels!
