Summer is coming to an end, and the anticipation is starting to build. College students across the nation are putting lake days, Netflix marathons, and living in their parent’s house on hold. It is time to prepare for the academic year that lies ahead. Move in day is right around the corner, with eager anticipation students must prepare on all levels for the months ahead. Below is a list of 10 things that most college kids can relate to at this time of year.
- First and foremost, the living situation. It is time to start thinking about how your house and room are going to be set up. You are asking yourself where that poster of your idol is going to go, where will your futon line up best, and how can you be most effective with your living space.
- It’s time to start checking your bank account and running some numbers. How much did you make working over the summer? How much did you save? How long will that last you before you make the inevitable phone call to mom or dad pleading your case for some extra cash for the weekend?
- How is the wardrobe looking? Are you overdue for some fresh new shoes? Does Jack Threads have any last minute summer deals going? You want to look your best for that first weekend out on the town, sometimes that means its time to do a little “necessary” shopping.
- Your home cooked meals have been quite the treat all summer, but you have a craving for your favorite food located in your college town.
- Exercise, a word that hasn’t played much of a role in your summer but is something now you need to start up again when you get back to campus.
- Hanging out with your hometown friends all summer was awesome and a adventure for the books, but you are ready to get back and see your college friends again.
- Your course load is starting to enter your mind, and you have to prepare mentally for long labs, early classes, midterms, finals, and late night cram sessions.
- Your résumé needs updated for fall career fairs, and possible internships or jobs. You are probably thinking how can I make my boring summer job sound like I was running a Fortune 500 company.
- Reflection, for most college students now is the time to briefly reflect on the last few months and question whether or not you accomplished all of your goals for the summer. For some the goals are finishing a Netflix series for others it is extremes like rock climbing or cliff diving.
- The last thing you have to do is figure out how to successfully leave your parents house on move in day. A successful move limits your parents' lectures about good study habits, saving money, and weekend extra curricular activities to a very minimum. I find it’s like a Band-Aid, the faster you make the goodbye the easier it is to get on with the great year ahead. The slower the goodbye the more college stories you have to sit through.
There you have it, a list of 10 things that are currently going through the majority of college kids heads at this point in time. The summer days are numbered; it is almost time to get back to your second home. Best of luck and don’t forget to take the Band-Aid off quick!
