10 things To Do Before Graduating College
Montgomery College

College is one hell of a journey, and it's a path some of us choose to help us get a feel of what it's truly like to go out into the world on our own. Besides the fact that college teaches you the essential skills you'll need to get the job you want, college also shows you a lot about yourself that you didn't even know - no matter what you aspire to be in life. To the few who are blessed enough to attend college, pat yourself on the back. Your first homework is complete! Now in order to fully get that college experience, as from my personal experience and what my upperclassmen friends have told me, here are 10 things you HAVE to do before you graduate.

1. Go to your school's game day

There's nothing like showing pride and support for your school's team, those guys and gals go through rigorous training and 9 times out of 10 they perform their best for the crowd. So why not show up and cheer them on? Even for those who aren't huge sports fans, you might actually enjoy yourself with a group of friends making memories. College goes by fast. So why not make it worthwhile?

2. Go to homecoming

I can only compare this occasion as the adult version of prom, don't judge me please. Now I personally haven't seen anyone dress too extravagant for homecoming, but then again, there's nothing wrong with that if it's what you like. Homecoming is a social and fun event, you get to meet more people and show off your dance moves. Besides the lovely catering and fun-filled night with friends, attending this event is like a milestone in your college years. If you don't go, you're essentially missing out. You've worked hard right? Go have fun! Enjoy yourself, everyone deserves a night to wind down and let loose! Bring out your best attire and shake that tail feather!

3. Go on a road trip

Not into the party scene? Totally fine! Why not go on a road trip with a few friends? Get a group of your closest friends together and plan this out thoroughly -- trust me, the last thing you want to do is suggest changes last minute -- and think about your destination. Or no destination. Put the phone down and get in touch with your surroundings, check out places with your friends and make memories - oh and don't forget to play some good music. I recommend The 1975, Queen, Pink Floyd, Sublime, Rebelution, and Bob Marley for those reggae lovers!

4. Study abroad

Who doesn't want to study abroad? If I had the money, I would love to study in Paris for a semester. Luckily, there are programs and ways to get scholarships so you pay little to nothing to study abroad. An English professor of mine told me that when he studied abroad somewhere in Europe, he had fun and the experience changed his life. Observing different cultures and being in an unfamiliar place is a great way to get out your comfort zone and start living.

5. Know what major you'll love doing

Ok, let me explain this one and why this is really important. Most people go into a major simply because they don't want to struggle with money and to impress their parents. And I know where you're coming from. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be financially stable and making your parents proud, if anything that's a selfless and smart act to a certain extent. Now here's my question: If you take your parents and money out the equation, do you still want to pursue that major? If yes, then by all means go in with your heart and soul! But if not, you've got to change that ASAP. Your parents have already lived their lives, and yes, of course their voice matters but you don't want to be miserable either, stuck in a job you dread. Same thing goes for money. Money helps with the loans and all but if it's what you're only after you'll still end up miserable in the long run. What truly matters is what YOU want and what YOU want to pursue. We have too many people throwing their happiness away because of financial situations and what others are saying. In your life, your voice is number one. Do what makes you happy and everything else will fall into place.

6. Learn to cook

Chinese takeout and pizza are honestly a gift to us, but unfortunately we can't have that everyday. Learning to cook can help you save money and slim down if you're observant on the type of foods you cook. Of course you don't need to be a top chef, but making simple stuff little by little is enough and doing it often helps you to retain that memory. Try eating healthier and mix it up from time to time, and once you live on your own you won't have to call mom to drop off food for you at your place. This vital skill is key to adulthood. Nobody gets it right the first time around but practice is essential. So go ahead! Own that kitchen! Just please for the love of God don't burn down the house.

7. Move out your parent's house

This speaks for itself. Do you really want to live under your parents' rules and limit yourself? Of course not! Listen, mom and dad are cool folks, but you want to spread your wings, too. Imagine coming home super late buzzed or bringing your boyfriend/girlfriend over. It's too awkward. Nope. Move out. NOW. This is also a part of adulthood, learning to live on your own.

8. Take a class that has nothing to do with your major

You learn a lot about yourself in different situations, taking a class completely from what you're used to can spark something in yourself. Personally I've already taken a class not connected to my major, and to be quite honest, it was a wonderful experience I'll never forget. Try it out. You might actually enjoy it.

9. Get an internship

There's nothing like getting a taste of your dream job while getting paid for it, even a regular job in your field is pretty exciting. This process isn't easy, but don't be afraid to ask around your college campus for help and tips on preparing for an interview. They're there to help you! Take advantage of your resources. Hard work always pays off!

10. Enjoy the best years of your life

Make these years in college worth it, plenty of graduates tell you it passes by fast and it truly does. Don't lose sight of your goal, and stop at nothing to get your diploma, once you leave you'll be ready to take on the world. All the tears, all-nighters, and stress will be worth it in the end. Work hard, study hard, don't be afraid to ask questions, learn, and have fun along the journey. You'll never know the meaning of success without knowing failure. Once you fall, get back up. Let's go college students! WE CAN DO THIS!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
