Ooops, I did it again.
I wrote another “10 Things” article and I’m #SorryNotSorry about it.
I still find it mind-blowingly strange how today’s teenagers can say that they were born after the year 2000. It makes me feel old.
I also feel old whenever I get a sense of how quickly time is flying by and how soon my next birthday will come, in which I will officially no longer have “teen” in my age anymore.
Because I know that I am not the only 19 year old feeling this way, I have decided to write a throwback article for us to reminisce about all that was good in the world before technology completely took over and before pre-teens evolved into humans who had the ability to skip awkward life stages.
Here are 10 things that all 90’s kids will remember and appreciate.
1. All That
If you have never seen this show, then you have never lived.
All That was the teenage equivalent to SNL; with hilarious skits, fun parodies, and musical performances done all in front of a live studio audience, All That was literally “all that” in its day. This show is what made all 90’s kids permanently fear the skin of their principals, have a yearning for bubble baths, and wish that there was a Good Burger to order from, just so we could hear those famous words in person:
“Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger! Can I take your order?"
2. Bop It
This toy is what taught all 90’s kids obedience. Although there was originally only 3 actions one could do, a Bop It could keep anyone preoccupied for hours. The toy has since been remodeled into “extreme” versions, but the basic premise remains the same:
When in doubt, Bop it.
3. Hit Clips
Before there were iPods and downloading music was as easy as pressing a few buttons on a touch screen, there were Hit Clips. These devices were the coolest thing since sliced bread. Each clip played one song when inserted into the portable music player, and us 90’s kids were LIVING for it. Imagine listening to only one song for hours on end.
That’s called dedication.
4. Denim Overalls
Move aside Tumblr girls – 90’s kids were the originals to rock this trend.
Well…technically overalls originated from historical agricultural lifestyles but... they weren’t considered “hip” until the 90’s.
Honestly though, who could ever dislike overalls? They are comfortable, can go with almost anything, and are the closest you can get to wearing a denim onesie in public without being questioned.
You never dreamed of wearing a denim onesie? Just me?
Excuse me then. Why don’t we just agree to glaze right OVER ALL of this nonsense I just wrote then….PUN FULLY INTENDED.
5. Butterfly Clips
Although this trend is totally cringe-worthy now, butterfly clips were once all the rage (the more I write about things from the 90’s, the more I use 90’s lingo - who the heck says “all the rage” in 2016?). Butterfly clips are one of those beauty trends that went right along with fuzzy caterpillar hair ties and leaving the front strands of hair out like antennas. What can I say?
In the 90’s, we were totally buggin’.
6. Disney Channel Original Movies
DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THIS! DISNEY CHANNEL USED TO HAVE THE BEST MOVIES. CAN WE JUST TAKE A MOMENT OF SILENCE TO REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING:
Halloweentown
Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century
Smart House
Don’t Look Under the Bed etc.
NEED I SAY MORE?
7. WonderBalls
My favorite part of accompanying my mom to the grocery store when I was little was when we got to pick out candy to take home, and I almost always chose this. A Wonderball had everything – the outside shell of delicious milk chocolate was perfectly divine, and encased a good amount of sweet tart candies that were in the shape of the most popular characters of the time. 90’s kids are truly lucky to have gotten to experience such a treat that today’s children probably have never even heard of.
It’s a wonder these no longer exist.
8. Telephones
Now I know some of you may be thinking: we know what telephones are; we were not born yesterday.
And if, in any case, you were actually born yesterday, as in the day before this one, thank you for accessing my article through your smart-phone. The device you are currently holding is just like a telephone- except it’s not.
I made a point to include this one on this list because I recently saw a video in which a girl, around the age of 11, did not know how to hang up a regular phone. So take this as a PSA for those who were not born in the 90’s:
If you see a device with wires, cords, buttons, and a handle-like part that you can pick up and hold to your head, it’s probably a telephone.
“911, there’s been an emergency. I’ve got a telephone in my hand, and I can’t hang up."
9. Slinkies
These are so old that I almost forgot what they were even called.
*cue old-timey voice* “Back in my day, we use to have springs as toys.” These toys made 90’s kids appreciate staircases a lot more.
Oh, what fun it is to push things down stairs. Slinkies. People. It’s all the same, right? (Sense my sarcasm. I do not advise you to push anyone down the stairs. Unless they are strapped to pillows and wearing a helmet. Then I would say go for it. My sister and I did that in the 90’s, and we turned out fine. #Yolo.)
10. Boybands
I have made it my ultimate life goal to be the first female in a boyband, and that is all thanks to the 90’s. We may have groups like One Direction and 5SOS today, but no group will ever be able to replace the special spot that 90’s kids have reserved in our hearts for groups like the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync.
Don’t fret, N’Sync. Even though your decade is “gone”, we’ll always be “thinking of you”.
