10 Things I Want My Little Sister to Know Before She Turns 10
Meagan Grant

This time ten years ago, I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my little sister. Looking back, I know I didn't realize how much one little girl would change my life. Of course, I was only nine at the time, so I didn't really know what having a new baby at home meant. After a few weeks of getting used to all the crying and dirty diapers, she was quickly becoming my favorite person. Now here we are ten years later, it has been ten years of endless argument and laughter. I'm so proud of the person she has grown up to be, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for her. Here is some advice to help along the way.

1. Trying your best doesn't always mean that you succeed, but that's okay.

You should always be trying your best, but don't get discouraged when life still knocks you down. You are so beautiful, smart, and talented. You can do anything you put your mind to, but it may take more than one try. So, just keep pushing.

2. Dressing up is overrated.

I know you are such a tomboy right now, but I can see a hint of girly-girl slipping through your tough exterior. I know that there will come a day when make-up and new clothes is all you want to spend your money on. It is okay to still have days with no makeup and wearing your rattiest pair of sweatpants. Dressing up can be fun, but don't spend so much time worrying about your appearance.

3. Don't do anything that doesn't make you happy.

You have been involved in so much. Soccer, basketball, piano, and chorus; I know that it can take a lot out of you. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to do anything that you don't like. Life is too short to be doing things that don't put a smile on your face.

4. Always listen to mom.

I know you don't see it now, but mom does so so much for you. She has so much to do, and she almost never takes anytime for herself. She worries about you so much, so make her life a little bit easier and just listen to her. Surprise her by cleaning the kitchen or vacuuming the living room. Do anything you can to make her life easier.

5. Don't let a broken heart, break you.

I know that you are so not into boys right now, but the day is coming. When it does, don't let them hurt you. You deserve the entire world, and don't let any boy tell you that you don't.

6. Stop growing up so fast.

It feels like just yesterday you were learning how to walk. Soon, you're going to be in middle school, and before we know it you'll be graduating high school. Just slow down, and enjoy it. This is the easiest time of your life, and you will never get it back. Don't let it fly by you.

7. Don't be so bossy.

It's good to be in control of your own life, but you don't have to be in control all the time. You also don't get to control everyone else. Just let yourself relax, and enjoy what's going on around you.

8. Appreciate everything you have.

You are so blessed. You have two amazing parents that give you everything you could ever want. Don't take your life for granted.

9. Never forget to pray.

God's grace will carry you through life. Ask Him for help. God is always going to be there to hold your hand, even when you feel like you are alone.

10. I will always be in your corner.

I know that I moved away, and you pretty much became an only child, but I will always be here for you. Any time of the day or night, I am just a phone call away. When you're not strong enough to fight your own battles, I'll be there to fight for you. I love you.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
