If you are a new college student who is planning on living in a dorm, it can be a bit overwhelming. Here is a step by step guide on what to do. Just breathe–everything will be fine–and remember to have fun in this new and exciting time in your life!
Step 1: At the beginning of the summer you are thinking, “I have all summer before I need to pack for college.” Three glorious months of relaxing before you are back in that school grind.
Step 2: Start making lists. Lots and lots of lists. A list for bathroom supplies, school supplies, what clothing items you may need, bedding, desk items, decorations to make your room feel like home, organizers/storage, cleaning supplies and pretty much anything else you could think of.
Step 3: Realize that you are done making lists of supplies and you are not even half way through the summer. You still have plenty of time to get everything.
Step 4: About three weeks from move in day, you go to the store with your mom or dad and buy everything on your lists, and I mean everything. Now your room at home is full of stuff you have never had to make room for before, so it is a little crowded.
Step 5: Packing your clothes begins. It is now time to narrow down your closet to the outfits you actually think you’ll wear. Your room becomes a mess with different piles of clothes everywhere–donate, keep at home and pack for college.
Step 6: You are now about two weeks out and all packed… wait, I still need my towels after showers and clothes to wear. So you have to now unpack everything. A little inconvenient but doable.
Step 7: The day before you are officially on your own for the school year, you have to pack up the car. Over packing and having to shift things multiple times is definitely probable.
Step 8: Move in day is finally here. You get to campus and there are people to direct you to where you are to unload. There are countless other students looking around wide eyed, just like you.
Step 9: You start to take the multitude of things out of your car and take trip after trip up to your room. Your roommate and your stuff is now crammed into the tiny room.
Step 10: Last but not least, you unpack. Maybe you brought more than you needed, maybe not, but you finally get your room to feel like home–since it will be for the next several months.
