Because moving into your new home away from home can cause all kinds of emotions.
1. Waking up the morning of move-in day and realizing that you still aren't completely packed.
Think back to the entire last week when you thought binge-watching Grey's Anatomy was a better idea than packing your suitcases.
2. Attempting to pack up your car and realizing you own waaaay too much stuff.
Here’s hoping that your little sister will ride in the trunk of the car, smashed between suitcases and boxes for the duration of the ride down to school. Because obviously bringing all fourteen pairs of shoes that you own trumps your sibling’s seat in the van.
3. Arriving on campus and meeting up with your roommate.
Maybe you met online or through mutual friends. Perhaps the housing department threw you together and said “Good luck”. Or maybe you’ve been friends since the ripe old age of four and you’ve been planning your dorm room together since middle school. Anyway, meeting the person who you are going to live with for the next nine months is always exciting. You may just have found a best friend who will order pizza with you at 3:00 a.m. in the morning or always find time for twelve second dance parties.
4. Getting to your dorm and realizing that everything you spent packing now has to be unpacked.
That’s right. All those tubs you filled to the brim and forced into the trunk of your dad’s van now have to be hauled up seven flights of stairs and made to fit into a room the size of a large shoebox. Have fun with that.
5. Spending the next four hours arranging your furniture and figuring out how to make everything you brought with you fit.
Be prepared to work hard arranging your desk and unpacking your clothes. Put your family to work arranging the orientation of your bed in approximation to your closet and bed.
6. Setting up your bed and covering it in decorative pillows and cute blankets.
Halfway through arranging all eleven of your throw pillows you'll realize that this is probably the only time your bed will be made all semester.
7. Meeting all of the new people on your floor.
Hall meetings led by your R.A. are a breeding ground for new friendships. Sure, everyone hates icebreakers, and if someone asks your what your major is (for the millionth time) you may go crazy. But being in a room with everyone coexisting in the same building with you gives you a chance to find a new friend. You may just realize that the girl five rooms down is also widely obsessed with 'How I Met Your Mother".
8. Pretending to be happy when your family says it's time for them to leave.
You know the semester is going to be great, but that doesn't mean you aren't going to miss the crazy group of people you grew up with.
9. Realizing how much you'll miss them.
It really can't be time for them to leave yet can they?
10. Collapsing into bed and dreaming about the semester that's about to start.
You didn't realize how tired you were until this very moment. Crawl into bed and prepare for another busy day tomorrow.
