We were all there. Being a preteen, teen, or whatever we want to call those *awkward/interesting/overdramatic* years of our lives, was sometimes tough. This is the case especially when it came to heartbreak. You know exactly what I'm talking about. The middle school boyfriend/girlfriend thing that you had to assume was your first real relationship, even though it most likely wasn't, and the drama that played into it, even though there was nothing dramatic about it.
Well, way back when, we needed music that spoke to our souls during these times of so-called "young love" and relationships. However, when things went downhill, it seems that there was always a playlist or song that hit right to our core, even if we didn't know what being in love was yet. Man, we certainly had a way of relating so deeply to something that was in no way similar to our situation, but it felt like the artists were speaking our heartache.
Here are the top ten tracks for a middle school heartbreak. You know them, you loved them, and they got you through. Have fun looking through (and also cringing at times). Hey! Remember that we are here now, and not keeping our text signatures as the dates of our anniversaries...
1. Heartless (Kanye West)
This track came out in 2008. It was the ultimate diss, and you could relate so deeply it now makes you wonder how.
2. Take a Bow (Rihanna)
This track came out in 2007. Rihanna made us feel some type of way when we could realize that applauding our exes for their mistakes was the ultimate payback.
3. Irreplaceable (Beyonce)
This track came out in 2006. I don't know what is better- the sassy tone that we then adopted and used with our friends, or the message of being better than anyone who does you wrong.
4. Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson)
This track came out in 2004. Kelly made us see that the world could stop turning if our middle school special someones didn't think we were cut out for one another. She captures the sad gazes, and the longing thoughts we had while staring down the line of lockers at them perfectly.
5. Photograph
This song came out in 2005. Although it pertains more towards an idea of being nostalgic of childhood and an easier time, we related to it because it was catchy and obviously missed being in...elementary school?
6. Too Little Too Late (JoJo)
This track came out in 2006. JoJo sincerely defined the way we could only imagine talking to the guy who broke our heart (but not really, it was just dramatic). The empowerment that this song brought might have begun back then, but it still shines within us.
7. 7 Things (Miley Cyrus)
This track came out in 2008. If you didn't know that it was about Nick Jonas- how didn't you? Not only did it get us caught up in the whirlwind romance we all thought we saw on The Best of Both Worlds tour, but it made us want to rip our teddy bears and pictures of cute boys because, well, Miley did.
8. Mr. Brightside (The Killers)
This track came out in 2004. You'd be lying if you said the rocky edge didn't make you feel like you could jam out and strut out of the house being mad at everyone.
9. I Hate This Part (The Pussycat Dolls)
This track came out in 2008. The best thing about it is that it was so heartfelt and the tune really did strike some of our heart strings, but come on. What did we like more: the music video or the song itself? It defined the emotions we had when breaking up with someone...and at the time, they were so, SO real.
10. Pocketful of Sunshine (Natasha Bedingfield)
This track came out in 2008. This one isn't so much a breakup song or one about teen-angst. This was the song that I know was so many of our anthems, and it still, in my mind, will always be a go-to song to blast when with the friends you first heard it on the radio with.
