These words have come apart of our everyday lives. They're catchy and unique sounding phrases that fit the typical public interest and are used in almost all types of pop culture. I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I do not use these words on a daily basis as well. These words, commonly known as slang words, an easy way to express yourself in an distinct and individualistic manner. Think of slang as a trial period for new words. If people say terms that are not being used In traditional language, and a majority of people accept them, then these words eventually become part of society's regular language. With that being said, here are 10 accepted slang words that our elders will never understand the meaning of.
1. Hot
This is the only exception where adults may have caught on to what this means. This word is used in two ways. The most common way we use this word is to describe something or someone that is very attractive, good looking, and sexy. The other way it is used when we are describing something that is wanted by the police or has been stolen. Regardless, which way you use it, "hot" is a slang word that is said more then it's actual meaning which is to describe a high temperature.
2. Rad
An abbreviation of the word "radical", this slang term has been made extremely popular by the well known and loved television series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This term is mostly used by individuals that are from the west coast. Although, I have heard my friends blurt this word out when they are excited or in awe. Also, anytime I am in the ocean I usually hear a surfer yell out this word after they rode a huge wave. Apparently, words like cool and awesome don't have the appeal like they used to. Even though, it comes off as goofy, rad has been the replacement term of the 21st century as it has no signs of dying out.
3. Buggin'
Insects and rodents are completely irrelevant to this widely used slang term. I usually get a good laugh when I hear this during a conversation. When some says your "buggin" it means that you are displaying a behavior that contradicts your normal personality. It also can mean when your acting like your under a hallucinogenic drug but in reality your actually sober. Basically, It means that your freaking out.
4. Deada**
This slang term sounds absolutely ridiculous yet it is said when your trying to tell someone to be completely honest and serious. "Deada**" is also a reply used by people who've been questioned on the truth of their comment. Without a doubt this slang term sounds like a joke but its meaning is the complete opposite of that.
5. Grind
No I'm not talking about what happens when girls are dancing at parties. This kind of "grind" is when you are in the process of doing something difficult. It's a cool word to say instead of saying I am going to work hard. For example "I recently was on that mid term grind as I found myself consistently going to the library."
6. Thirsty
Wanting to quench your thirst with a nice cold beverage unfortunately has nothing to do with this slang. Only my friends and peers around my age can understand this word. Thirsty is said when you really want something. Often it used to describe a aroused person. When I hear girls are ranting about how cute they think a guy is, I usually respond with "you're thirsty."
7. Mad
A phrase like "Im mad angry" sounds confusing and contradicting to some but it makes sense to others. Don't get it twisted with a feeling as this slang word is just another way to say 'very,' 'really,' or 'a lot.'
8. Rachet
Personally, I still do not understand why people say this slang word. Although, it is used to describe someone who is rude, obnoxious, or annoying. It can also be used to describe a group of people who are trying to act ghetto.
9. Dip
Last time I attempted to use this word in front of my mother by saying "I am about to dip" she replied "go get some chips." This term means that you are leaving abruptly. So, if the party you were at recently was boring than you would "dip" out to somewhere else. It is basically just another word for leave but it sounds a lot cooler.
10. Word or bet
These slang terms are practically synonymous with each other as they both are a way to say yes or to agree to something. Or it can be used to describe something that is well said. For example, If my professor were to tell me I got an "A" on my test I can reply that by proudly saying either bet or word.
