Every group has one. That one person who’s your mom away from home. They tend to let you get away with a few more things than our actual moms would but they still keep us on a pretty short leash. So here are 10 things that definitely make you the mom of your friend group.

1. Caregiver

Whether you caught the bug going around your dorm, or you’re hunched over a garbage can around 2am on Saturday morning, you can always count on them. They’re there to rub your back or hold your hair back no matter what time of day it is.

2. Cheerleader

The one person who manages to have a positive attitude at midnight, when you’ve been studying for four hours straight and have no hope of passing your exam the next day. They’re sense of encouragement makes it seem like it’s going to be okay and by some kind of miracle you will pass

3. Cleaner

Whether they’re a neat freak or not it’s more than likely that you’ll find them with a vacuum or dust pan in their hand at one point or another, even if it only is when we get the phone call that someone’s parents are stopping by for a visit.

4. Sober

Just cause they’re the mom doesn’t mean they can’t go out, but chances are that at the end of the night when it’s time to go home, they seem to be the only one who can remember how to get back to the room, find their key and properly form a text message on their own.

5. Caller

So everyone decides they’ll skip out on the dining hall tonight, and order a pizza instead, but who’s going to actually call in the order? Chances are this person is a pro and has not only called in a number of food orders, but is the only name your landlord knows, and has maybe even made you a doctor’s appointment.

6. Protective

If you’ve gone out with that guy from bio or you’ve walked to the library late one night by yourself you know this one far too well. They need to get a good look at bio Bob so they know who to beat up if they break your heart or will send you a series of texts if you don't respond that you arrived to the library in the appropriate time it takes to walk there. Bottom line they’re constantly making sure their little ducklings are okay.

7. Mary Poppins Bag

Whether it be a stain stick, dish soap, or a tape gun, the mom always seems to have the most obscure things, but they tend to be the only person that has what you need in that very moment. They tend to come to the rescue far too often.

8. Listener

They’re typically more than willing to sit and hear about your latest stressors. Whether it be boy drama, or a class that you just can’t seem to catch a break in, they’re more than willing to sit and listen about how much you hate every single bit of it, and even offer a piece of advice when they can.

9. Mom Jokes

As much as we can stand them, these are the friends who we can typically count of for the cheesiest of jokes, yet sometimes there all we need. They can be the worst jokes in the world but every once a while those corny things are exactly what reminds you why you keep good old ‘mom’ around.

10. Unconditional Love

Even though you left a huge mess in the common room, or you sat on their favorite sunglasses, or your just being annoying in general, no matter what, there’s not a whole lot that will make ‘mom’ so mad they won’t love you. By the end of the day they’ve probably forgotten about the issue and are on to their next project.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
